Please join our effort to “Move San Diego to a Clean Energy Future” on Saturday, September 24, 2011. Local grassroots environmental groups are joining together to stage San Diego’s response to the 350.org call for an international day of action on climate change on Saturday, September 24, 2011.
Hundreds of similar events all over the world will be held that day to send a strong message to our leaders that climate change is real and will dramatically diminish the quality of life, prosperity, and happiness for us and our future generations. As individuals we are changing our ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and we demand that government do the same. Only together we can reverse the trend of overheating the planet which will cause weather changes, geographic instability, food shortages and irreversible ecological damage.
Our specific demands for the event are a mix of some key local and national policies our elected representatives need to enact:
· Move the region forward. Ensure the 40-year Regional Transportation Plan (to be approved in November) realistically reduces emissions to meet official California goals.
· Fund public transit and bicycle transportation, rather than more roads.
· Put a price on carbon emissions.
· Invest in clean energy and clean energy jobs.
· Support the US signing international treaties to bring carbon dioxide back down to 350 ppm.
Our events on Sept 24 will include EarthKeeping: an Interfaith Dialogue (10-11 am, St. Paul’s Cathedral), a march and Rally (11 am – 1 pm, Balboa Park), and organized bicycle rides and public transit routes to the events originating all around the county. More details are in the attached one page description of the events. So far Congressman Bob Filner and Marshall Saunders, President of Citizens Climate Lobby are our confirmed speakers so far.
Additionally, we will be collecting pledge cards before and during the event that convey our message to elected representatives. Constituents will pledge personal actions, make the above demands of their elected representatives, and clarify that they will vote only for candidates who commit to strong and immediate action on climate change.
If you are part of an organization, please join our coalition. We will add your organization’s name and logo to our website and printed materials. There is no monetary obligation, but we would expect all partners to promote the event to their members in newsletters, emails, etc. If you have a tabling event coming up we can supply you with flyers for your table and have a volunteer join you to pass out flyers. We can also draft a newsletter article for you.
Our website, www.SanDiego350.org, includes event details, an online version of the pledge card, a list of supporting organizations and businesses, and downloadable flyers & signs.
Organizations participating to date include: Sierra Club San Diego, EarthKeepers San Diego, California Center for Sustainable Energy, California Interfaith Power & Light, Citizens Climate Lobby, Greenpeace San Diego, Green Party of San Diego, Move San Diego, and the Sustainability Coalition of Southern California.
Our planning group meets about every 2 weeks. Your organization is encouraged to send a representative, but we understand if you are not able to attend.
Sept 24 is less than 2 months away so we look forward to hearing from you soon!
Thanks,
Cathy Mendonca
