I'm new to the world of SDRs and trying to monitor my local P25 network.

I've got an RTL-SDR dongle installed on my laptop, and it SDR# sees it and utilises it OK.

When I start up sdrtrunk (sdr# is not running at this time), I get a message "DISABLED - Right click to select a tuner".  But no tuners are listed, and "new" is greyed out so I can't add one (if that's how I would do so).

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get past this point?

Thanks!

I should add, Right Clicking the message just gives me the options to change zoom and colours.  There's no option to do anything like add a tuner.

Can you post your application log? It's not recognizing your tune. There might be a reason listed in the startup logging.

Oh dear...there is.

The full log is below, but I think this is the relevant line:

20180904 183018.527 [main] INFO  i.g.d.s.tuner.TunerManager - usb device [0BDA:2832] NOT LOADED: SDRTRunk doesn't currently support RTL2832 Dongle with [RAFAELMICRO_R828D] tuner for tuner class[USB Tuner:RTL2832_VARIOUS Vendor:RTL2832 Device:SDR Address:0BDA:2832]  [9MB/15MB 62%]

So it seems that the device I bought, which claimed to be a "RTL-SDR RTL2832U R820T2 TCXO AM FM DSB USB" device is not what I thought it was :-(

But thanks for installing decent logging, which has enabled me to find this out!

The device is what YOU think it is, but Windows does not know that.  Did you run Zadig and install the driver?

I was thinking the same thing. Did you use Zadig to change the drivers? These RTL-SDR dongles were originally designed to watch DVB-T television in countries other than the United States (they do not work with ATSC, the format used in the US). The original drivers work differently to tune signals so there is a replacement driver set (I use WinUSB) to make this cheap device work for a function not originally designed by the manufacturer. You want to change the drivers so instead of being a television tuner, you make it a software-defined radio tuner. After you do this, you will likely want to hang on to Zadig because Windows has this nasty behavior of reverting the drivers back to a television tuner again, making your SDR software not recognize it anymore until you re-flash it. This doesn't happen all that frequently, but it has happened to me about two or three times that I recall.

Yes, I did use Zadig to change the drivers, and I ran it again to check the correct drivers were still installed when I encountered this problem. It’s definitely showing that the correct driver is in use.

I’m running it on a Dell laptop with Win10 installed. Not sure if that would have any bearing on this?

Unfortunately right now SDRTrunk doesn't support that. :(

I got burned by this and now have 6 sticks with the FC0012 tuners. :( :(

Right now I am using for some other things, and had to replace the SDRTrunk setup with V3 RTL-SDR.com sticks.

So hopefully maybe the 828D and FC0012/11 tuners get supported.

See another post for some FYI for all! :)

Some FYI for all to keep in mind.

1) RM has EOL'd the 802T/T2 and is ONLY TAKING them on LARGE BATCH ORDERS and was via a 2nd source FAB, NOT RM itself. Airspy?? and RTL-SDR.COM had issues with QA on these, and eventually resolved it... So new devices were available.

Supposedly ONE OEM is making most of these be it the V3 or other generic ones...

2) Maybe hopefully Our benevolent developer will find the time to add support for the newer 828D and the older FC0012/11 tuners?? :) Please , pretty please! :)  I've got 6 FC sticks to find bugs with??? ! :)

3) Something to keep an eye on is HyrdraSDR

4 FOUR, INDEPENDENT SDR with 820T tuners! :)

This is sort of like the Outernet SDR board, sans the "PC" part to run it. :(

But FOUR tuners one board, would solve my RF bandwidth.

See:

I had hopes for the Outernet board for my own uses, and then they nuked it, before I even really got to play with it.... URGGHH...  Just like the Wolfson audio card on the Pi's! URgggrhh.

So when the Hydra boards come, I will order enough at least to make it usable. I don't have any use for what ever their scheme of passive sync SDR radar whatmacits are...  The Outernet ones would have been better with their all in one design.Don't know if it would be usable with SDRTrunk with lack of a GUI... but other users like rtl_airband, rlt_fm etc.. for non trunked areas.

These ARE using the 820T tuners....

We'll see! I planning on getting a good handful to have spares, use etc.. :)

I only have E4000, R820T, and FC0013 tuner dongles on hand that I can use for testing/development.

Can you point me to a link to purchase an R828D dongle specifically, or if someone wants to loan their R828D dongle to me?

WRT the hydra sdr ... I'll probably buy one of these.

Are there difference between FC0012 v. FC0013??  At least programming wise? ? ? I know there are some tuning differences..

If (as I suspect will happen) I end up getting a refund for mine and not having to return it, I can lend you the one I’ve got!
