Greetings from Las Pilitas Nursery! Well, we are finally getting around
to publishing our first newsletter. Thank you all for your ideas and
patience. Those of you who have visited the nursery lately may have
noticed a few changes here and there, such as the addition of signs for
our plants (finally!) and our newly planted front berm! We have been
quite busy this summer preparing for our Grand Opening and first annual
Acorn Days celebration taking place on Saturday, November 22.

Grand Opening?

Why, you are asking, are we having a grand opening when we have been
open for over three years? Admittedly the idea sounded a bit odd to us
too. We discovered, however, that many small businesses are open for
some time before they have a grand opening. With limited resources it
can sometimes take years to build up stock and prepare for such an
event. We have grown in leaps and bounds in the past three years,
though, and are now

prepared for our Grand Opening in which we will celebrate the growth
of our little nursery and present a more user friendly and organized
(hopefully!) layout to our customers. Many thanks to all of our loyal
customers who have been with us and helped our little nursery grow
through its infant years.

Acorn Days

Acorn Days is a public educational event celebrating California’s
natural heritage. It will be taking place at the nursery on Saturday,
November 22 from 9am to 4pm. All stock will be 10%-25% off and we are
inviting artists and representatives of groups dedicated to the
preservation of California’s heritage and natural history to participate
in the event.

Those wishing to volunteer in preparation for Acorn Days may do so by
calling us at the nursery at (760)749-5930.

We hope to make this an annual event with exhibits, art, and informative
lectures that celebrate California and its natural wonders.

Plant Profile

California Goldenrod

Under-used and unbelievably charming!

Our plant for this issue is California Goldenrod (Solidago californica).
This is one of those plants that, for some reason, is overlooked by
many people, and frankly, we just can’t understand why. It’s quite
possible that its name might have something to do with that. One
mention of the name “Goldenrod” has many people backing away and pulling
out the tissue box. Never fear. California’s goldenrod is not the cause
of all those nasty allergic reactions, rather it is the ragweed that
grows with goldenrods in the wild that is the culprit. Solidago
californica provides beautiful plumes of golden color spring

through autumn and is the perfect answer to those wet, full sun areas
that need some dressing up.

Landscaping idea: Make an oasis in your lawn! Plant a California
Redbud (Cercis occidentalis) in a bare patch in your lawn and surround
it with goldenrods, Golden-eyed Grass( Sisyrinchium californica) and
California Strawberries (Fragaria sp.) for an amazing show of color that
will be the talk of the town!

Goldenrod Tip: Trim off spent plumes to keep your goldenrods neat and
encourage more blooms!

Don’t forget to bring us your used (but useable please!) 1 gallon, 5
gallon, and 15 gallon containers and old flats or wood pallets for a
credit on your next purchase!
