While visiting in San Diego, I noticed what looked like a busy Cajun
buffet restaurant on El Cajon Blvd about a mile east of 70th St.

Does anyone know if it's any good?

Thanks

Sherman's, most likely.

It's not, in my opinion.
It's "cajun" only because they misspelled the street it's on....

Heh-heh.

I wouldn't call it Cajun. I'd call it Louisiana-style cooking, or Southern
cooking, or soul cooking, or something like that. I'm no expert on these
things.

We rather like it. I'm particularly fond of the jambalaya, and the bread
pudding. The chicken, dirty rice, and potato salad are also pretty good.

I don't know if it's worth going out of the way for, but if you live in the
western part of East County, as we do, it makes a nice, inexpensive meal in
a pleasant environment.

Another reason I like it: it's one of the few restaurants that I can find
that draws a large black clientele. It's a view into another culture.

Thanks, I might give it a try. I don't think that's a primarily black
area. It must have something to bring people out there.

Are there any vegetarian selections in the buffet? My lunch buddy is a
vegetarian and we have been looking for a Cajun place to try. This place
sounds perfect since it is so close to school (SDSU).

It's called Sherman's Cajun Creole Buffet. it is pretty good and a decent
atmosphere. I have not been there at night but it does seem to have a nice
club like area away from the restaurant. It's not a bad price at about $9
for an all you can eat buffet, and you will like it.

Don't confuse "Cajon" (ka' hone) with Cajun (kay jun)

While we're on the subject of Cajun...

Whatever happened to Brendory's in Imperial Beach? I heard they moved,
but I never found their new address. Are they still in business?
Where?

They have a salad bar, vegetarian gumbo, candied yams, cornbread,
collard greens (not sure if they use a ham stock, but it didn't taste
like they did -- you'll want to ask, though), as well as a bare-boned
salad bar, and of course their dessert bar. I think you'd have enough
to eat there as a vegetarian.

Strangely enough, their seafood gumbo did not contain any okra. To get
the gumbo I wanted, I mixed the two 50/50.

I would call this more of a soul food restaurant. They have Cajun-named
items, but they definitely weren't Cajun-spiced (in my opinion). I used
a lot of the cayenne hot sauce and Tabasco that was on the tables.

I would rank it like others have -- not a bad place if you are in the
area. It seems a bit stiff of a price ($8.50 for lunch, $11.50 for
dinner) for the quality of the food, especially the desserts (I thought
that their "bread pudding" was nothing more than canned vanilla pudding
dumped on top of piece of banana bread). Then again, there are some BIG
eaters there (I definitely fit that category), so my guess is that most
people eat their money's worth in quantity.

I liked having candied yams and collard greens on a buffet, though, and
one can always space up gumbo and jambalaya to their tastes.
