Here is the process to setup Cox without using the CD. It is not as
daunting it looks!
Step A - Activate your new Cox Account:
1. Go to http://support.cox.net and Click on "Cox@Home customers Click Here
to setup your new Cox High Speed Internet Access.
2. Click on "Click Here to Begin Converting."
3. Enter the 12 digit Authentication Code from the letter in the "Kit"
4. Enter the primary username from your @Home account and retype it.
5. Click Next and follow the prompts.
6. When it arrives at the part to run the CD, DON'T. Go to step B.
Step B - Activate your secondary email accounts (if you had more than one
@home email account).
1. Go to http://support.cox.net/custsup/index.shtml
2. Under Email, click on "Adding/Removing Email Accounts"
3. Enter your primary Cox.net email address and password.
4. Click on Email.
5. You will see a list of each email account you had on @Home. To activate
each of them, click on Change Password.
6. Enter a password (it can be the same one you had for @home).
7. Do this for each separate account.
If the system does not allow you to log in to this feature, wait a few hours
and try again. (I had to wait 7 hours after I activated my primary account
before the system recognized it.)
WARNING: If you choose to Delete any accounts they will be deleted
immediately from @HOME!
Step C - Add Cox Email Servers to your Email Program
Your existing software is set up to check the @home email servers, which
will be active until Feb. 28. You should ADD new mail accounts (identities)
to be able to receive mail on both Cox and @home until Feb 28. (@home will
not be forwarding to your new Cox email address.) If you have more than one
@home email address, you will have to set up new accounts (identities) for
each Cox.net email address.
Go to http://support.cox.net/custsup/email/settingup.shtml and follow the
instructions for setting up the email. If you use an email reader other
than Outlook Express or Netscape, go to
http://support.cox.net/custsup/email/POP_SMTP_settings.shtml for the email
server settings to enter in your email. See also page 41 of the Manual for
the email server settings.
Step D - Add Cox News Server to your Newsreader.
1. Go to http://support.cox.net/custsup/newsgroups/index.shtml
2. Click on your operating system.
3. Click on Outlook Express and follow instructions.
See also page 43 of Manual.
Step E - Set up your Web Browser
This changes the proxy settings. Do not use if you are behind a firewall or
are using CookieCop.
1. Go to: http://support.cox.net/custsup/help/Web_Browser_Setup.shtml
2. Choose your operating system.
3. Choose the Web Browser you use.
4. Follow the instructions.
The main point is that you should make sure that you are not using the @HOME
Proxy.
Step F - Set up your Network settings to connect to Cox.net
Go to Page 13 of the Cox High Speed Internet User Manual and follow the
instructions for TCP/IP Setup for your operating system. CAUTION. If you
find that you have to change any of the TCP/IP settings, write down what
they were before making the change. If you lose connectivity to the Internet
after making these changes go back and reinstall the original settings.
About February 15, go back and try the new settings again to see if they
work. If they do not work then, call technical support.
Step G - Activate your WebSpace Accounts
1. Go to http://support.cox.net/custsup/index.shtml
2. Under Personal Web Pages click on "Adding Personal Web Pages"
3. Enter your primary user email and password.
4. Click on Add a Web Page for each email account that you want to activate
WebSpace.
If you have WebSpace on members.home.net, you will have to copy those files
to your new WebSpace account. Go to
http://support.cox.net/custsup/personal_pages/instructions.shtml for
instructions. You may have to download new FTP software.
Step H - Send an email to everyone in your address book notifying them of
your change of address for both email and WebSpace.
IMPORTANT. Cox had to start this system 5 months ahead of when they
scheduled. EXPECT intermittent outages. If you are experiencing problems
check the Status Page http://status.cox.net before you try to call
technical support.
I hope you find this useful.
