Dear all,
We have a new normative SDMX-HD document ready for comment, which provides clear guidance for the implementation of the SDMX-HD exchange format. It is available from our website at http://www.sdmx-hd.org/news/show/3 . Please provide any comments on it before May 1st to be included in the next version. Updated implementation guide and tools, including an update the WHO Indicator and Metadata Registry(IMR), will follow soon after.
I would like to offer a special thanks to Gary Patchen and Bob Jolliffe for their hard work on this document.
Please join our conference call on Wednesdays at 4:00 to discuss this work, if interested. Call details will follow.
Please accept my apologies for any duplicate mailings.
Best regards,
Patrick

Subject: SDMX-HD Normative Document
Dear all,
With the imminent release of SDMX-HD version 1.0, including documentation, tools, and implementation in the WHO Indicator and Measurement Registry (IMR), we are restarting the weekly calls. We will also discuss the Connectathon proposed for the end of September in Ghana.
The dial-in number from any public site : + 41.22.791 1112 + ID: 1008#
This number will be good through next October.
Best regards,
Patrick
<<Agenda_2010_08_11.doc>>
That is good news. Can we also discuss the setting up of a proper
mailing list as an agenda item. I know there are people (Carl and
Luke cc'd) who would like to participate. And probably some on this
cc list who might want to opt out. Also I find it is useful for the
transparent record to have an archived list which is why I have
generally persisted with the old google groups list. I understand
there were some technical difficulties before but I think we can
overcome.
For the benefit of those who may not have participated before, the
calls Patrick refers to are Wednesday afternoons 16h00-17h00 CET
(GMT+1) - may not be afternoon where you are.
Regards
Bob
Oops. Sorry Patrick I just noticed you gave the time of the call in
your subject line. And that Geneva is indeed 2 hours ahead of GMT at
present.
Also forgot to copy Carl and Luke ...
Cheers
Bob
Just a quick update in advance of the meeting:
1. I have last month gone through a process of addressing most of the
comments received during the public review period. These resolutions
are currently available at
http://svn.sdmx-hd.org/sdmxhd/schematron-sdmx-hd/resolution_of_comments_public_review.html.
I know they all have to be transcribed into the issue tracker but I
haven't done that yet. There are some issues in there which require
some discussion.
2. There are in addition about 5 minor errors which have been
communicated to me by email from Gary. Not sure how best to share
these other than just forward the mails to a list (which I hope we
will discuss) or create issues on issue tracker (probably both).
Either way they are not contentious and require mostly simple fixes.
3. Regarding metadata and MSD I have had some out-of-band
comments/queries made to me about why we use attributes like
"_DESCRIPTION" etc instead of just "DESCRIPTION". To be honest I
don't recall the rationale, but if it isn't a strong one I think
reverting to the names without the preceding underscore will be less
jarring.

Bob

FYI - The rationale for _DESCRIPTION and other concepts named with an underscore prefix was that these concept are generic concepts that can be used in any metadata reports.
E.g. "_DESCRIPTION" is a metadata attributes for Indicators, Organisation, Geographical place etc, yet other concepts e.g. "ASOURCE" are often specific to one report e.g. Indicators only.

Yes that is right. I remember. But do we *need* to discriminate like
this? I'm trying to understand if it adds any value to anything. If
we *really* want to treat some concepts differently to others then it
would be better to have them in different conceptschemes than to
cryptically code the names of the concepts like this.
So a question: Does your software make use of the fact that some of
the concepts have underscores? If not then I think they are more
distracting than any value they might add. If we do need to maintain
the fact that some concepts can be used across metadata structure
reports, lets put them in a separate list.
Regarding metadata reports and metadatasets in general, I don't think
anyone's really reached a situation of concrete use/implementation
yet. I've got some idea about how those metadata reports might look
but I haven't really applied myself seriously yet. Whereas we have
learned a bit about defining and exchanging datasets, metadatasets are
still a bit speculative. Having said that, getting it right will be
really important - having a solid way of exchanging for example
indicator and facility metadata is really key to any harmonisation
efforts. Regarding the IMR for example, there has been a lot of
discussion of DSDs, but I think what many people are really looking
forward to is the indicator metadata reports.

Bob

I was simply raising a comment I had received and since we haven't had
that much external input I thought it was relevant. I do understand
that you have an imminent release - which is why I am asking do you
make use of the fact that these concepts have an underscore in your
software? If you don't and they are just an aesthetic nicety then it
might not require much to remove it. If its a bigger issue then
naturally we can revert it to 1.1.
