You learned the basics on our last run, now put them to the test! SD
Jeepin' is planning our next run out at Corral Canyon, a great off
road area just a few miles down the I-8 from Pine Valley.

Who - The trails we are going to hit are more extreme than anything we
did during the B2B event, but aren't impossible or completely insane.
As such, it's recommended that you have some confidence in your off
road abilities and your Jeep...'s performance. 32" tires and a bit of
lift is highly suggested. A stock JK could likely get through with
some effort, a stock TJ would have some trouble. As for the camping -
anyone is welcome! The trail to the camp site is a packed dirt road
suitable for any type of vehicle. There are also easier trails so if
we get a group that is interested in staying a little more docile, we
can have two runs.
What - Camping and Off Roading! The plan is to get there Friday
afternoon and set up camp. We'll hit Sidewinder on Friday Evening
(Road 908 on the map). It's a good tail with a few intense spots,
including a rock ledge that is nearly vertical and about 8' tall -
it's a thrill! If you're coming on the night run, bring flash lights,
warm clothes, and patience! Saturday morning we'll head out and do
Bronco Peak (Road 906-907 on the map). We'll take the left fork to
avoid the craziest part of the road unless some of the more hardcore
members want to take a crack at it. We should be done with the run for
a late lunch, and people can return to camp, head home, or stay
another night. Time permitting; we could do a third run for those
interested.
As mentioned earlier, there are some easier trails in the area,
similar to what we saw in Pine Valley. If you want to join us for
camping but don't feel up to the harder trails, we can suggest some
other options.
Where - We will be camping at the Bobcat Meadows campground. Check out
the link at the bottom of this post for a good map. How do you get
there? Take I-8 east until you get to Buckman Springs Rd. Take Buckman
Springs south for about 3.3 miles and then turn right onto Morena
Stokes Valley Rd - it's a poorly signed dirt road at the apex of a
turn. Take that for about 6 miles, you'll go through wooded areas then
up a steep hill with a ton of switch backs, and then pop out at the
top at an area known as 4-corners. There's a big staging area and map
there - GPS coordinates of 4-corners is 32.724873,-116.559309 The road
goes in a few directions at that point - stay left and find your way
to the camp ground. I've never personally been there so I can't say
how well sign posted it is, but if anyone has experience, please post
it below. There are NO camp fires allowed on the camp ground (sad
face) but we are allowed to have BBQs, gas stoves, grills, electric
stoves, any other type of contained grill like device.
When - Camping is first come, first served, so get there early! I plan
to get there around 5pm assuming I can get out of work early. The goal
will be to set up in generally the same area so we can have a fun
evening and not disturb everyone else too much. We'll probably hit the
night trail once it starts getting dark, maybe around 7:30pm or
8:00pm. On Saturday we'll head for the trail head at 8:30am, and
someone will swing by the 4-corners staging area first to pick up
anyone who got lost, so if you can't find us, be at the 4-corners
staging area by 8:15am. We should be done with the trail around lunch
time.
Why - That's pretty obvious. We did discuss Ocotillo, but voted
against it for a few reasons. Jeep Jamboree USA will be there that
weekend and changes $195 per person to go with them. Operation Desert
Fun will be out there that weekend and charges $40 per vehicle. Both
of these are large groups, and more than we want to pay to go off
roading, so we figured it was best to avoid that whole area until next
time.
There's a lot of information left out here so plan ahead. Gas, food,
water, tents, clothing, all that needs to be planned for. We may be
able to share resources to help each other out. Also, if you plan to
camp out, you are supposed to have an Adventure Pass for your vehicle
- you can get them from a number of stores, they're $30 for one for a
year for the first vehicle, $5 for a year for a second vehicle, or $5
for a day. We may be able to pool our money and have one person go buy
a few first vehicle and a few second vehicle passes and everyone pays
$17.50.
Also - it should go without saying, but we'll say it anyways - if you
bring beer or other alcohol to the camp site, don't drink before the
run and don't bring it with you on the run... We don't need people
being stupid in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night.
