ATENEO de Manila University put on a spirited stand but it wasn’t enough to stop powerhouse Sandugo from hacking out a straight sets triumph in the 9th Shakey’s V-League Open Conference before a huge crowd Sunday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Featuring first conference MVP Jang Bualee and a host of other superstars, Sandugo simply had too much firepower in the 27-25, 25-19, 25-20 victory that sent them into a tie for the solo lead after Day 1.

Bualee led all scorers with 16 points and 10 digs highlighted by 14 kills and two aces while Suzanne Roces, a former MVP herself, also had her way and posted 13 markers.

Sandugo setters Rubie De Leon and Rhea Dimaculangan alternated in orchestrating Sandugo’s attack and combined for 22 excellent sets against Jem Ferrer’s 18.

Nene Bautista, another ex-MVP in the Sandugo squad, had nine markers while hulking Thai Utaiwan Kaensing chipped in with seven.

Alyssa Valdez and Dzi Gervacio tried to keep the fight for the Lady Eagles and finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively, even as Ferrer sparkled with six markers. - with reports from Jerwin Espiritu
