University Games president Roger A. Banzuela, that schools participating in basketball have increased with 24 teams in the men’s division. The volleyball event also increase with 26 teams in the men and 24 in the women’s side.
With the numbers of schools increased, the number also of schools in thirteen events are expected to increase.
Other events are athletics, chess, taekwondo, football, table tennis, lawn tennis, swimming, beach volleyball, karatedo, and sepak takraw.
Banzuela also said that the teams are coming to join this year’s Masskara Festival.
He expects schools from far Northern Luzon and Southern Mindanao to come early, but not discounting the schools from Metro Manila I time of their closing in either NCAA or UAAP.
Far Eastern University (FEU) has the most number of events to defend this year after winning them in Roxas City, Capiz last year with Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion as host.
FEU is set to defend the titles in men and women’s athletics; men volleyball; women’s football, women taekwondo and women’s chess.
Banzuela believe that a huge turnout of entries may come a week or a day before the opening as the usual occurrence in the past hosting. This tertiary sports competition is also supported by Philippine Sports Commission.
Other schools to defend their titles are; Ateneo de Manila University in men’s basketball; Adamson University I women’s basketball; University of the East in men and women’s badminton; De La Salle-College of St. Benilde in men’s chess and men’s taekwondo; National University in men’s lawn tennis and De La Salle University-Manila in the women’s side; Rizal Technological University in sepak takraw; San Beda College both in men and women’s swimming; and also in men’s table tennis. University of the Philippines-Diliman in women’s table tennis; University of St. La Salle in women’s volleyball; Foundation University in men’s beach volleyball and Southwestern University in women’s beach volleyball.
This event is also supported by Smart, Gatorade, Redbull, Molten, Mikasa, SONIA Trading, Ceres and hosat USLS.
Banzuela g is optimistic more collegiate schools are joining as the venue, which is consider the "Home of UniGames", is very accessible to all participating schools from their destinations to billeting centers.
The support of a huge sporting company specialize in sandals and later invest on all sports equipments and athletic uniforms starting this year will be a plus factor of UniGames.
Sandugo has inked a whooping P1.5 millions supports to UniGames in six years, according to Sandugo Executive Vice President Perry Doroja during the signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with USLS in June.*
