St David's Foundation Garden Meeting Notes

Date: Feb 14, 2026: 10am

Location: The Brickyard Apt Meeting Room

Attendees

  • Corey, Mitchell, Steven, Randy, Debbie, Pooja, Liz, Doreine, Marceline, Danielle, Rachel

Agenda & Discussion

Opening Discussions

Plant Theft at Garden

  • Marceline brought up concerns that she’s continued to have plants stolen from her plot. Most recently she lost a broccoli head.

  • There are “Do not pick signs” available in the shed that gardeners are encouraged to use in their plots.

  • Deb would like us to reconsider our gate policy and locking the garden

  • Corey will report to Austin Parks and make sure we get more formal signs reminding people that the community garden plots are not for sharing.

New Gardener Tips

  • Discussed some general tips for new gardeners. We’ll have at least 6-7 new gardeners soon with the new plots and some plot turnover post-inspections.

  • Reminder that we have public Gardener Resources shared on the SDFCG public website and additional private links in your gardener dashboard.

  • Gardeners are also encouraged to discuss in Discord.

Garden Finances

  •  Corey reported on Garden finances. January expenses were generally low.

Plot Inspections Recap

  • See Discord for a full recap of the last quarterly Garden inspections.

  • 30 out of the 55 plots inspected received a failure notice or warning. Many of these are quick fixes as can be addressed with just an hour or two of work in your plots.

  • Plots that failed have 1 month (until March 9) to address issues. If you will not be correcting issues, please let us know ASAP so we can reassign your plot immediately.

Policy on Plastic: Continued discussion

Voted to approve a more generalized version of the garden plastic policy we discussed last month:

  • “Plastic may be used provided it is intact, secured, and not breaking down. If it is showing any signs of degradation it must be removed. Appropriate use of plastic will be checked as part of regular quarterly plot inspections.”

  • Hard plastic containers and tools are ok provided that they are not breaking down.

  • We’ll continue to consider how to make sure we’re minimizing the risk of polluting microplastics in our environment while also balancing it with the reality that plastic is a part of modern life that can’t be avoided.

It’s My Park Day Planning: March 7, 2026

  • Sign up now and spread the word about It’s My Park Day on March 7, 2026 from 9am-12pm.

  • SDFCG It’s My Park Day Page: This is a great opportunity to recruit new volunteers.

  • Sophia is organizing. Contact her on Discord if you’d like to help.

  • Deb suggested that we get snacks and refreshments and will post on Discord about it.

Amplify Austin: March 4-5, 2026

  • Amplify Austin is our biggest fundraiser of the year.

  • Funds are match 1:1 for all donations made to the garden.

  • Britt is organizing and will share details when our fundraising page is live.

  • Deb brought up that the Water Tank repair would make a great project to designate.

Committee Updates:

Compost, Trash & Recycling

  • We built a new composting bin this past workday! Next we need to install a door hinge at the bottom to create a little short “door” to prevent compost from spilling out.

  • We approved the purchase of hinges and zipties to complete the project.

  • At the next workday, we will transfer the compost into the new bin, and take apart bin #2.

  • Update on Shed Removal: someone from Homewood Heights community garden is interested in the shed by the NPG. They are working on getting transportation for it.

Outreach & Communication

  • Texan by Nature Grant - would be a good grant for a gardener to help apply to

  • See details on Amplify Austin

Common Garden Areas (Polinator, Orchards, Welcome Garden, Pocket Prairie)

  •  Wildflower Garden - it was seeded in the fall so we’re waiting to see what sprouts

  • Pocket Prairie - There’s a layer of chalky material that Debbie is working through. Needs some additional help and asks that people coordinate with her Deb

  • South Pollinator Butterfly Garden - Pooja has reviewed all the notes from Jeremy and is preparing fro the spring. Liz and Pooja will touch base on it since Liz has background.

  • North Pollinator plots are looking great! Thanks Caroline and all for your efforts.

Shed & Inventory

  • Purchased a new lock for the wheelbarrows - combo is the same.

  • Mitchell will look that the wheelbarrows that need repair.

Maintenance

  • The new plots are ready to be assigned.

  • The trench is ready to be filled in along the new plots in Phase 5.

  • We will build 2 more raised by the sidewalk once the dirt has been moved.

  • We still need to rope off 2 more plots that are in the plan behind the arbor.

  • Compost - the plastic under the current pile needs to be removed.

    • We need gardeners to scrape and remove before we can order more bulk compost

  • The hose by the south pollinator garden might need to be reviewed - it makes a lot of noise right now.

  • Projects for Gardeners: Watch this 5-min video if you need ideas on what to work on or reach out on Discord for ideas of what else you can do.

General Items and Discussions

  • Ordering seeds - Discussed if we want to order sharing seeds for the spring. Liz and Rachel will connect with Katie on this.
