What's "Bugging" Schwarzenegger?

When Arnold Schwarzenegger was swept into office in 2003, one of his first
acts was to order his official stationary without a union bug.
Schwarzenegger's then-spokesperson, Karen Hanretty (now a talking head with
Fox News), told the Contra Costa Times: "It's a Republican governor, and
Republican elected officials do not use the union logo on their stationary."

It was a sign of things to come.

Schwarzenegger waged war against the state's labor unions in 2005. Among his
special election initiatives was a "paycheck protection" initiative that would
have gutted the political power of the state's unions by making union dues for
political activity optional.

But the unions kicked his ass in the 2005 special election. And ever since,
Schwarzenegger has been mending fences with the California Teachers
Association, SEIU, Building Trades, and others. In fact, the only union
seemingly on the outs with Schwarzenegger these days is the correctional
officers powerful CCPOA.

So it should be no surprise that the Governor's office is back to using
letterhead with the union label. I'm not sure how long it's been back in
circulation, but I noticed a sheet yesterday and it stuck out like a sore
thumb. In any case, the move back to stationery with a union bug is a small
but important signal that the Governor has totally shed the conservative skin
he lived in during his early days in the horseshoe.
