Hi guys,

So as you may or may not know, I am currently spending the summer in Asheville, NC.  It's an interesting place in more ways than one, but it's awesome.  It's very liberal here - arguably more than SD.  Well I went to a meeting of the local young dems last night, and I just wanted to share some things with you guys.

the pres. reminds me a lot of colin parent, which is funny.  Anyway, they're pretty cool folks, and they have a huge budget for the local population.  They do a lot of fundraising aimed at getting money from the older party members
and it works.
their budget is 7k ish a year and the county (not the city) has a highly conservative population of around 2 million.
They do a llot of breakfasts at the county party HQ and raise a  bunch of money that way.  They have it catered by a local cafeteria (those are big in the south).   Random idea but apparently it works.  The old people are really into it.  It's buffet style and they charge each person like $5 or something.

Anyway, it seems to get them in touch with the rest of the party.

their meetings and stuff are pretty weak compared to what we do in SD

we're much more community service and internally focused compared to them, just for some perspective.

I'll let you know what else I learn about them.  I kind of feel like a mole writing this, but I thought I'd share fundraising ideas.  This is really random, but they also go collect old appliances from people and take them to the scrap metal yard for $$$.  They get like $50/load.  this may be an idea that is more effective here than SD, but you never know.

they had a kusinich (sp?) event about a month ago that raised about $1000 for the club as well as some cash for him.  But those kind of local politics are rare in CA.  He came, gave a speech at the university, then they held a town hall about students issues.

Also, a lot of them back Edwards.  This is his home state and all, but come on.  The 'who do you like best for the primary' discussion here was a lot different that what you would hear in  our group. No one even mentioned hillary and they don't really like obama.  This did take place between like 6 people, though.  I tried to tell them the country is sick of southern presidents and they didn't seem to like that comment very much.

Hope everyone is well!

Aggie
