Hey guys,

This weekend, I participated in the call with Strike Debt social media team.  I'm forwarding the meeting notes for your information.  As you may already have noticed, as a result of that conversation, SD twitter is now tweeting about post office and CCSF and tying together nationally the issues.  I think this strategy of coordination will result in much more media attention for all of us - in NYC, here in BA, and for the rest of the country.

There were a couple of questions that I couldn't answer.  If anyone has answer, please reply.
1) how many people on our discussion list?
2) Do we have an email blast list besides the discussion list?
3) What's the plan for a website?

Jane.

¡Saludos.

Here are the minutes attached and pasted w/o a proper scrubbing, but well done;

If you all can look through and;
- correct/amend your contact information
- decide if you'd like action points delineated, in which case reply with what you took on
- comment on anything missing and or typo-ed

Also:
If someone who was at the meeting would like to send in a brief narrative summary. It'd be nice to include.
Send addy of people who weren't there but expressed interest eg. Detroit people

I'll resend as complete, otherwise do take as is.

¡Cheers.

Strike Debt Chapters Meeting Agenda

Facilitation by Zak and Aaron

Beginning of meeting:

Overview of Meeting:
What we plan to cover, what our expectations are in terms of goals.
SDNY goals:
1] Resource sharing
Explain what we have in terms of resources
We’re still figuring out what and how we want to share
Understanding what your needs are will help us develop that plan

2] Physical convergence
[who can talk about this?]

Check-ins / Ice Breaker:
Everyone give a brief introduction and check-in

Overview of Social Media / Tech capabilities in SDNY [Aaron]
Twitter (daily posts, hard to share ownership, but we have strikedebt-sm email list)
FB (weekly; easy to share ownership - though SDNY not sure we have decided to)
Blog (occasional; unclear how to interface with this)
Email announcement list (20k+ ppl; rarely used, $200/pop; unclear how to interface)

Getting to know each other:

Guided by Aaron

Discuss the Strike Debt principles put together by Strike Debt NY (which can be found at http://strikedebt.org/principles-of-solidarity/). Thoughts and feelings? Have you found it useful? Etc.

In terms of the movement, what are your needs?

How can we coordinate our efforts & work more closely?

Towards a regional meeting:
Physical, Virtual or both? When? How often?

Sharing Resources:
Guided by Zak

In terms of technology, what are your needs?

How would you like to be represented?

How do you currently represent yourself on the web?
Would you like to consolidate our web presence, stay separate or both?

Concluding Remarks

Overview of Social Media, Tech Capabilities

Resources that we have: SD_ twitter account about 12.5K Occupy account 12K followers; can use to post new articles; debt issues local and broadly; hard to share privileges; have email address - strike...@lists.occupy.net about a dozen people send message someone will post; looking at subscription fee service

FB - 25K followers; posts a little less often thatn twitter; similar w/ twitter send photo  and links w/ brief text; a bit easier to share ownership; haven’t figured out how to share exactly; do please send content to share

.org - extremely high quality researched article; general sentiment to keep quality level up; would like to increase frequency; keep quality and content re: debt; def consider the blog and website as outlet

Email announcement list; everybody contributing to RJ all announcement lists; $200 a pop to send announcements; if you have an idea though please give word and will figure out how to finance; still want to push people onto that list; appreciate idea re: physical convergence

Zak - google calendar; do other chaps have a calendar? Would like to consolidate; NY doesn’t have anything listed by including other chaps it can be filled

Bob - Q - publications and manuals? People should know about those things;

Aaron - Y

Anne - we have the DROM available for free through site; published new edition in fall; RJ still going strong - latest dent buy ater this fall;

George - maybe Bob is also asking how available, Physical copies;

Bob - if we need physical we’ll DL ourselves

SDOK and everyone should feel ownership of it

Zak - Also DROM ; talked about making it web based; important way to make it more accessible; looking towards making it available; If you from other chapters have web people pleas e get in contact w/ us; def need people; will give email address to put together resources; anyone know of people off hand

Steve - yeah I did the design stuff; also did freelance - we can talk

Bob - we have a graphics person Sarah real pivotal doing tri-fold

Zak - that would help top for DROM ; website relied on photo bit illustrations would help; left graphic s tens to be confrontational; don’t want to come off as joining SD to be dangerous to you

Laura - we should have another conversation re: RJ; certainly fish for debt in your area; for Oregon happy to talk later about RJ;

Carolyn - couple of people who might fit the bill; will ask; get in touch or they will

Aaron - in general cartoons; illustrations; and memes; 1K ideas little capacity to implement them

Zak - Looking to integrate presence of other chapters; redo the site; central hub for all chaps; a better sense of how we all work together;

/////

Principles

Aaron - has anyone not see them; Ran through principles; look at this through vision of what you want to do in your specific chapters; basic premise looking at systemic analyzation of debt; solidarity between multiple different types of debt; make sure all is open to discussion; if you read this there are things you want to add/change please give word; just ask then;

/////

NeedsToHelpAchieveNextSteps

- What do you need from the movement; what would help achieve next step goals?

- How we can cross post stuff; SD_ BA; if you can help us grow out twitter; is there a strategy on how to cross post cross tweet

Aaron - not aware of that; have things to share and reTweet; we can rT ; maybe after Friday follow up and point towards that

Dan - in terms of connections; interested in how the faith community ha steppes up; high motivations; how faith groups can be reinvigorated- Judson Memorial- and other groups; If theres more connections

Carolyn - I think we have would love ongoing political strategic discussion; how to bring things together; love Rj for focusing on student loan debt; I know people are excited about possibility of regional meeting; if and when we finish video - then all of your social networks would be awesome in order to get it out; concept to position all the little details in terms of debt; should we finish it and do a god job;

Laura - re: faith based group; George will talk about putting together a national gathering; Judson has allowed us meeting space; are you thinking about ways to share resources; get word out; not necessarily more resource sharing; One person were working with have ties to Southern Cali; and do work out west; that hasn’t materialized;

George - take few minutes to develop bringing forward hope for a long period of time re:  bringing together all our different groups toward a physical gathering; still floating; one of the reasons b/c this conversation needs to go outside of NY- to create a physical gathering; physical presence is really important; lots gets transmitted through the body; SD_NYC still discussing this; how such a gathering will take place; important that other groups want such a thing; and under what conditions; place and time- need to put our head s together

Laura - we have G hangout as a tool to do this; sharing and debeloping an analysis would be useful

George; there is a very striking increase in the event s that we are involved w/ on a national level Oregon is having a national character; the place of Student debt in politics; things are moving ahead we want to make sure were responding accordingly; national gathering would be apropos and time; shared by and created by as many people as possible;

Bob - Think of all people on, we’re at different place re: maturity; we can use a lot of help; but don’t want to lose what we’re all about; when we talk about a gathering; would be great to get together ; but good to come to terms of what we want to accomplish; I want to make sure that we want to maintain autonomy; to move ahead faster together; we had two meeting and don’t know what the heck were doing ; I feel like were a little kid

Laura - DR - makes sense and would welcome suggestions to make things less NY centric; all sorts of ways to collaborate;

Bob - DR - I think for me the we’re not really I don’t want to have happen or make sure to happen is to have an organization here part of the larger thing but have an organization here; make sure that we are not relying on stuff from other people

Aaron - You don’t want to be in our debt

Bob - yeah...

Jane - my idea: we create an interesting feedback loop; A good way to do that is for SD-Bay Area and SD_NY - to create simultaneous movement; this elevates to national movement; helps raise actions to national level actions; Occupation right now!_; the Bronx doing similar actions; we can now make the post office a national issue; we should focus on getting other people to do simultaneous actions; can we implement some sort of way to do coordinated actions?

Aaron - didn’t know about the thing in the Bronx; if we sent it out in the list we might move towards coordinated actions in the future;

Jane - now and both lists ; see a lot of cross posting; don’t see actions being cross posting; I can take it up on myself; there are certain things that lend to national; the school stuff - a giant movement; Occupy SF - working with State; link Cooper union with SD_NYC; and make a more united front; I can start throwing it out on the list;

Aaron - you said it let people know about these actions; we haven’t done much in re: actions; if you want national coordination - push for it; reflecting people not wanting to do ground actions here in NY that has little to do with national coordinating;

Bob - national action needs national consensus - can make connections but I cannot; Jobs w/ Justice people - but a little out of scope to me but might be just me; I don’t think were able to do that at this time; because we are not in consensus

Jane - talking about actions that are already so that SD in all localities can be involved; State cc

Aaron - this is the first anyone has said; continue talking about it

Laura - we need to have some context re: information we’re putting out; if people don’t understand why Post Office is being linked that’s important

Jane - lets use more efficiently the things that we already have;

Zak - we don’t have hood sweet; Does it cost money?

Aaron - Y. We have been posting the things that  your sending us. What are other ways to communicate the desire for simultaneity

Zak - if you were posting things on the calendar for example that might be a way to efficiently post

Bob and Dan - I don’t get it; what were working on s something specific; actions that relate to that;  I don’t see the advantage of us working on it in this group

Dan - we understand that if your focusing on mortgage debt way different than other foci

Laura - how are you looking at to develop SD_portland?

Bob - getting more people involved; working w/ other organizations; mostly around education

Dan - I know we have debtors assembly; were looking towards that;

Bob- we need to get our email list from 25 tp 250

Dan - we don’t have a twitter; account; fb page; we have adding privileges; we’re very young;

Anne - timeCheck : 240PM; what do we want to accomplish

Aaron - one more round then close stack; the focus on municipal debt; then move to sharing resources

/////

ResourceSharing

Aaron - heard a lot of different foci; and different pillars of debt; the position we’ve taken Medical and Mortgage drawing connections btwn those; incumbent to accept that there are these different divergence; drive to austerity drives personal debt for eg.

Jane - the regional diversity here in Sf not everyone has debt; high salaried debt kids; to us it just strategic; not everyone else is not indebted in that manner;

Zak - go in to each group; where are you  onLine presently ; refresh memory to compile list what kind of content do you post; but feel unable; still interested; tumbler interested in merging?; would like a national post in traffic when A.Goldstein was on Bill Maher; one person include address in chat also list potential designer developer volunteer; will be in contact again w/ more solid plan; would like to at least designate a point person for each group; One person to come to me w/ questions

Portland

Bob - google group; google form to get added to group; what w post is mostly meeting announcement; would like to post most  content; principals; would like to build email list;

Dan - no website; no twitter; only media presence; are created events under Occupy Portland page; and Occupy Portland twitter page; other than that there are no formal; we do have this one person here in the graphic design - very active in occupy; can’t make commitments for her; can connect to her

Boston

Carolyn - we have website; part of the wiki for Occupy Boston; hasn’t been updated; has meeting notes; missing some things; there are three people who are the tech people; will work on the contact; a coupe of different lists; regulars and other;

CQ - beyond tech - affiliations; is there such a thing about affiliating? We’d like to get some formal affiliation;

Laura - something we can talk about that w/ SD_NYC

Zak -represent different chaps and resources

Bard -

Steven - capacity - focus on student debt exclusively; not engaged w/ community issues; did something w/ Occupy Duchess; FB page; a couple of riseUp lists; haven’t time to build the website; thinking about doing a tumbler; had in mind doing orienting towards some publishing; may lend to blog;

Active list around thirty; discussion list >100

Bay area -

Jane - Twitter just set up; four people tweeting; we have two fb; an accident; two different people two accounts - process of consolidating; made tumbler - ; trying to create website; have a professional SocialMedia person - will whip us into shape;

Zak - at end add to google doc

Jane - We have lists - how many we have will get back to you;

Zak - will add to google docs

/////

Physical Convergence

Aaron - Zak’s superpower is doing clean and organized chaotic mess unified web presence; second thing - good for us to come up with next steps re: physical convergence;

George - I think certainly SD_NYC needs to get its own house in order re: physical convergence; discuss amongst ourselves on how such a gathering will take place; this discussion should be taken up b/c there are many questions; a lot to thin through; what is it’s agenda and how to move to that; not just a debtors org  but a political org with lots of points to be made; part of discussion to be made in order to get to a national physical convergence; much to be discussed in all places before anything can be decided upon

Dan - great to talk about; in a couple of weeks; Aug 21; Kalamazoo; that’s literally an opportunity on our doorstep; Im in several of their groups; trying to turn their wheels re: transportation and housing; several in Portland going; not sue if they have Sd in theory timeline; one thing that they can be doing tying RJ and SD into the discussion; Has anyone here talk about Kalamazoo Michigan; or speaking to anyone doing that - it’s a huge project;

Aaron - Many of us are burnt out and past our limits

Zak - I have a limit and its low

Bob - would like to suggest; like to chap to chap discussion; trying to build those relationships; in my organizing it’s all through relationship building;

Laura - that’s great; I think it’s good

Aaron - that it re: agenda

Carolyn- what’s the plan for follow up

Laura - communication  for follow up; further development shared resources; we should have a round  of follow up conversations, and rendezvous

Aaron - resources -Zak;  Social Media -  Aaron; Re: conversations... ?;

Laura - could be less formal -; we’re having a conversation later; If Bob wants to join great;

Stephen - Zak and Aaron at meeting tomorrow ? N.

Bob - somebody will send out list of participants;

Laura - and people who weren’t able to join

Dan - ANNOUNCEMENT:: Strategy meeting in North Portland; 2. Be in private and open discussion group; along with finding transportation; plug in SD conversation; 3 - highly excited to have a SD- Connection in portland; absolutely agree with SD national presence; some in Portland who aren’t in any activist circles would find it great

Hmm... I'm really disappointed that I wasn't given access to this. I put aside time to participate in this, received the agenda, and tried to contact Zak and Aaron 10 minutes into the meeting. It feels like I was left out of a chance to be connected.

Oh no, I didn't realize!  The original email invite said that we were supposed to email back and give our emails.  That's what I did about three days in advance, and I got an invite to the hangout, and then I just did it.  I didn't know anyone else was trying to connect on, or I would have told them to add you once the hangout started!  Anyways, I think they will do it again.

Hi All,

Jane, great that you got on this call. And Christine, that's so frustrating... you've been doing so much work for Outreach, and I really wish that could've worked out.

In response to jane's questions:

The "blast" list is the Announcements list, with 200 people
The discussion list has maybe about 30 less people.
Christine has already been talking to Aaron about the website

Can we have an outreach meeting pre 8/10? I will be in Mendocino for the 8/10 meeting. Any chance of meeting sometime this week? maybe a conference call or google hangout?

I'm so sorry to say that I won't be at Saturday's meeting. I'll be up north. I'm especially sorry because I haven't met you yet, Jane! I just want to make sure that during Outreach report back on Saturday, Jane has a chance to debrief the group on the call; Christine has a chance to share all the work she's been doing and to see if she can get some more supports/help with nuts and bolts; and Christine also has a chance to talk about the separate conversations she's been having with Aaron re website, etc. I think Christine and Aaron are going to communicate again later tonight so that she can communicate some questions both of us had hoped to have answered in the conference call.

Long-ish story short, I suggested an additional meeting selfishly because I won't be there on Saturday, but my concerns are those above! ~hannah
