Dear Residents,
As part of our ongoing fire and safety preparedness, the Association had engaged Vega (Fire and Safety Services) to inspect the corridors and identify any obstructions that could pose a risk during a fire emergency.
Based on their inspection, certain flats have been identified where items are stored in the corridors. A snapshot of the vendor’s report is attached for your reference. We kindly request the concerned residents to clear the corridor area at the earliest to ensure compliance with fire safety norms and to maintain a safe environment for all.
Please note that non-compliance may attract penalties, as per safety guidelines. Additionally, surprise fire safety inspections and drills may be conducted at any time during the month without prior notice, and fines may be levied in case of violations.
Your cooperation in this matter is highly appreciated and is essential for the safety of all residents.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Warm regards,
Uma Dayal

Dear Mr. Uma Dayal and Members of the Association,
We are not living in a fully developed country with surplus infrastructure and flawless civic systems where only micro-level compliance issues remain to be addressed. Many fundamental challenges related to living conditions, maintenance standards, and basic facilities still exist around us. These larger, more impactful issues affect residents on a daily basis and deserve primary attention and resources.
When residents are already managing multiple real-world constraints, focusing aggressively on minor corridor storage issues and threatening penalties can come across as disproportionate and insensitive. The choice for residents should not feel like one between health, daily practicality, and paying fines.
A more balanced and empathetic approach would be to first address and prioritize larger, systemic issues impacting the society. I would suggest engaging residents in dialogue and education rather than enforcement and allow reasonable time and flexibility for compliance without immediately resorting to penalties.
Once the bigger issues are meaningfully addressed and under control, it would be far more reasonable and effective to move toward resolving smaller compliance matters.
I respectfully request the Association to reconsider the tone and approach on this issue, and to work collaboratively with residents rather than adopting a punitive stance.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
I have spoken with the personnel who conducted the recent corridor survey and understand that there was a miscommunication regarding the scope of the inspection. I have since discussed this with their manager, and the survey will be conducted again by senior staff.
Only major obstructions along the evacuation path from the fire shaft to individual flats will be considered in the revised survey. At present, some entries (including corner flats that are not part of the common walkable area) appear to have been incorrectly included.
Kindly keep my earlier communication on hold until the revised survey is completed. I will share an updated and accurate report once the rework is done.
However, as a general safety precaution, please do not place bicycles or any items which is heavy (non-movable) in the corridors and ensure that fire shaft areas are not blocked.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
Regards,
Uma Dayal

Hi Uma,
I understand the concern and intent of the communication. However, I would like to share some feedback.
Before sending messages to residents, they should be reviewed to avoid unnecessary confusion. I have noticed that in multiple communications, the follow-up response has been “hold on,” which indicates a lack of internal discussion within the association.
I expect clear and well-thought-out communication rather than rushed or unclear information. Please also ensure that the relevant MoM is shared for decisions taken.
Thank You.

Hi Uma,
Thank you for your continued hard work and dedication in meeting the expectations of your role.
Your prompt, direct communication and timely actions are helping everyone stay well informed. Residents were not expecting such active engagement, especially since there was no or very limited communication from the association last year. As a result, people are feeling encouraged and excited.
Regarding corridor cleaning, please take the decision that best addresses residents’ concerns while also complying with Fire Department guidelines. We will definitely try to avoid any additional fines in case of rule violations.
Thank you once again for your efforts and proactive approach.

Please avoid placing the entire responsibility on the vendor, as this should not be a one-sided matter. You had previously sent an email regarding fire safety and the ongoing audit, which means you had discussion with the vendor already. If the vendor was unclear about the rules[then I am not sure why we selected the vendor], it suggests there may have been a communication gap between the association and the vendor as well. I would say it would have been better that the association at least accepted this or acknowledged their mistake.
Additionally, I am uncertain about how certain items are being classified as acceptable to keep in the corridor. Our bye-laws clearly state that any items placed in the corridor pose a fire safety hazard. There was an email mentioning that if the floor members agree, the association would have no objection[i am not sure if that was residents/association]. However, corridors are common areas governed by the RWA bye-laws and cannot be subject to floor-wise exceptions.
If we are committed to enforcing fire safety regulations, we must ensure that corridors remain clear. Alternatively, those who have placed shoe racks or other items in the corridors should provide signed consent acknowledging that they are not complying with the rules. We cannot selectively interpret the rules based on convenience. When Krishna was part of the association, it was explicitly stated that nothing should be kept in the corridors. While it is understandable that some residents may oppose this, those who do so—and whose floors agree—should formally acknowledge their non-compliance. This will help ensure that, in the unfortunate event of any incident, responsibility lies with those individuals rather than the association or residents who adhere to the rules.
