Vin sat in the Starbase pondering his next move. To the untrained eye it
looked as if Vin was reading a novel, oblivious to his surroundings, however
he was playing an old game that he made himself while on his original tenure
at Starfleet academy.
Originally, near over a decade ago Vin joined Starfleet as a cadet looking
at a prospective Counselling position. He started the courses, completed
near 4 years of the six year psychology masters degree. However, a
counsellor's life was not for him. He had a few enemies, these were the
days near the end of the dominion war, and having a resemblance to a
cardassian wasn't exactly easy for him. This being said, Vin was quite
awkward socially bordering on the anti-social, which made him an easier
target. Vin excelled in the theory side of the classes, making him an
excellent analyst, bringing up the 'distaste' in others for him. Everything
that Vin did from then on was plagued by his fellow classmates making life
difficult for him. They played on his anti-social behaviour making his
overall grades suffer. It was at the end of the four year mark when he was
pulled aside by his course manager and given a 'counselling' session on
himself.
Vin was open, honest and forthright. This did not help matters though,
because he was considered slightly paranoid (when saying the 'others' were
out to get him, after all who could construe that in prospective Starfleet
Officers.) and ill equipped socially to be able to deal with patients in a
'concerned' manner. The course manager saw Vin's potential though and did
want him to stay and ride the rest of the course out, although with weekly
counselling sessions to overcome his 'problem'. Vin quit. He couldn't deal
with the 'problems' anymore. The course manager though not wanting to lose
Vin as he firmly believed that Vin could be an asset to Starfleet, near
begged Vin to reconsider, finally ending up offering a trade transfer into
the sciences. It took months for Vin to consider, however he did take the
offer and return to the academy.
However, back to the game. Vin had created a game when going through his
psychology degree whereby he sat, trying to be unnoticed yet observe
everyone around him, and lay judgements on them, what they are like and whom
they are. It was to practice his understanding of the different species and
their body language, and also his understanding of Ekram's Facial Action
Quoting System. For example, right now as he was 'apparently' reading a
PADD, Vin was watching two bolians whom normally people would consider that
they were in 'love' with their apparent proximity to each other. Vin though
realised within some ten minutes of watching that the bolians' relationship
was in some trouble. The female bolian was actually only 'feigning' her
body language and apparent emotions, every so often her eyes darting to
other prospective suitors as a means of 'escape'. The male bolian however
was also disinterested in the female as he was only putting on a display
too. His display was 'showing' off his gastrically challenged mate in order
to show others that she, although her girth, was still desirable.
Vin could already tell in this type of relationship, where both partners
wanted an end, it was more of a competition for them. A factor of blame
they wanted to put on each other. Had the male won, and made another male
take his place, he could blame her for leaving him for another and he could
also blame the man that came in to the ménage for being suckered into his
'subtle' attempts of 'pimping' his mate off feigning that he was doing no
such thing. The woman however, if she managed to find another that 'loved'
her more than her current mate, then she could blame the man for 'not loving
her enough'. It was all very complicated. "If only they talked to one
another.." Vin muttered to himself "they could end their relationship
peacefully because neither wanted to be there in the first place."
Vin pretended to read his PADD some more, watching some patrons of a nearby
Klingon restaurant with interest. The male was obviously strutting his
stuff, a typical trait as most Klingon's were rather boisterous and self
important anyway. But this klingon Vin took as rather odd, he seemed to be
a little too affectionate to his 'comrades'. It could be subtly that this
Klingon was only a part klingon, say probably an eighth or at most a
quarter, and couldn't biologically know the bounds of 'comradeship'
according to Klingon psychology. Or for the first time in his natural life,
Vin was noticing a homosexual male Klingon. It wasn't obvious, might not
have even been obvious to the Klingon male, but there were subtleties in the
way he moved, the quarter inch closer to the alpha male of the crew, the
hand unconsciously being placed a inch closer to a more sensitive part of
the male klingon anatomy such as just underneath the shoulder blade and not
a slap on the shoulder. Vin was watching with baited interest at the other
members of the Klingon crew that were in the restaurant. Were they
uncomfortable with the 'affectionate' Klingon's presence. It appeared not.
"Analysis - inconclusive" Vin muttered again to himself. Aside from going
up and asking the Klingon directly himself and risk physical harm Vin could
not determine if the Klingon was only part Klingon or homosexual.
However, thinking about the action of asking a Klingon a question did get
Vin thinking about a certain chef of his a couple of questions. He pondered
on the approach of the subject. Should he lay subtle hints, risk offending
him, however keeping in track with his own personal behavioural patterns or
ask him directly, placing Vin outside his own comfort zone and laying
himself on the line directly, a hard ask for Vin to make himself so ..
vulnerable. Vin had been made known about the communicator, however as to
anything else with regards to the 'Klingon Armada' (an over exaggeration)
appearing before the Scylax, Vin was not aware. So at this stage all Vin
knew was that his chef, Kaarg, had been utilised by Vin's former Captain in
many instances of distress with the Erinys because of his 'fighting'
abilities, and that for some reason Kaarg was with some contacts in the
Klingon Empire. Reasons who, what, when, where and how still evaded him.
Vin did know that hopefully however he would meet the Chef soon. He was
known to frequent the Klingon restaurant near to the Cafe Vin was passing
time in. It was well known that Kaarg actually took enjoyment out of
tormenting the Klingon Chef of the premises.
Oh well, to pass more time..
