Preserving Campus History

We tend to think about sustainability in terms of the present and the future. But how do we sustainably preserve the past? Although most Broncos are familiar with the Mission Church, many are unaware of the efforts that SCU takes to preserve its cultural and historical heritage. The efforts of the archaeological team, the de Saisset Museum, the California Legacy Project, and others on campus demonstrate the importance of preserving our diverse cultural heritage in a sustainable and engaging manner. You won't find Professor Juan Velasco talking about global climate change, energy conservation, or recycling in his courses. He doesn't preach the importance of buying a hybrid vehicle, and is not a member of the Environmental Studies and Sciences Department. Yet, students leave his classes with a deeper understanding of sustainability that Santa Clara University seeks to address. Read more >>

Energy for the Poor is a Top Focus of 2011 Global Social Benefit Incubator Program
Katherine Lucey founded Solar Sister in Uganda a year ago, using the Avon model of distribution to empower women as entrepreneurs and to bring energy into poor rural homes in Africa that would otherwise be in the dark or be forced to use unsustainable and unhealthy energy sources such as kerosene for light. Lucey is one of 19 socially minded entrepreneurs from around the world who will come to Santa Clara University, August 7 through 19, as part of the 8-month intensive Global Social Benefit Incubator (GSBI) program that helps them sustain and scale their businesses to maximize impact on underserved communities.

Events

The Lure and Lore of Yosemite: a 19th Century View
"The Lure and Lore of Yosemite" is the most comprehensive exhibition to date of art, literature and ephemera relating to the history of the Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Big Tree Grove. Visitors to the exhibit will get a powerful sense of the impact of tourism on Yosemite in the decades between 1870 and 1900. The exhibit also features examples of rare 19th century ephemera that attest to the intense commercial activity of this period.
(Exhibit ends on August 31).
