Broncos Move Out, Give Back

As our campus residents move out in June, they have been donating their clothes, shoes, and small furniture items to Goodwill Industries of Silicon Valley since 2006. Two years ago, Marquita Coe of the Registrar's Office (on behalf of the Staff Senate) added the opportunity for residents and the broader campus community to donate linens to local shelters. Facilities collects carpets and electronic waste (anything with an electric cord or battery) for responsible recycling, besides collecting cardboard and mixed recycling. Read more >>

Being creative and being sustainable could be two very distinct and separate qualities. Campus Ministry's Director of Ecumenical and Interfaith Ministries Reverend Aimee Moiso proves this assumption wrong. Recently highlighted at a Human Resources workshop about repurposing, Moiso illustrated how her crafts made from reused and salvaged materials can save money and conserve resources. Read more >>

Student Carbon Footprint Calculator

A student team developed a carbon footprint calculator for use at SCU, part of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics' Environmental Ethics Fellowship. The tool measures SCU students' greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy use, waste production, partying, travel to and from home during vacations, food consumption, and more. Samantha Juda, '13, was interviewed on a national radio news program about the online tool.

Events

Farmers Market on Campus
Throughout the summer, the Adobe Lodge will host a weekly farmers market, featuring organic produce. Marsha Habib, farmer and Americorps volunteer with Bronco Urban Gardens brings seasonal produce from the BUG Farm and nearby farms in Hollister. Last week's market showcased summer squash, kale, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, and beautifully sweet strawberries.
