So, I needed the Semantics Engineering with PLT Redex textbook to complete a homework assignment this week. I needed it in a digital format because I'm going to POPL 2016 tomorrow and I can't have it delivered to me. Hence, I paid $50 for the eBook so that I could complete my homework.
The problem is that I'm using Arch Linux and for some reason Adobe Digital Editions doesn't work for me. During installation it said that it might not work on a 64-bit system. Anyway, I tried to find an alternative solution and I learned that I could read the book using Bluefire Reader on my phone.
And it worked. I can read the book, but I don't want to read the book on my little phone screen. So, I transferred the PDF file that Bluefire Reader downloaded to my laptop in hopes that I could open it using a simple PDF reader. Then I double click on the PDF file with a smirk on my face... and it asks me for a password.
I hope you can understand my frustration. All I want to do is read the book that I legally purchased on my laptop so that I can complete my homework and get on with my life. I tried using other eBook readers like Calibre but it requires that I convert my ACSM file to EPUB using Adobe Digital Editions (which doesn't work for me). What other alternatives do I have?
The question is quite old, but people like myself still trip up on DRM locked ebooks. I assume you want to get out of the acsm a DRM-free epub. My instruction is for Ubuntu/Debian using apt-get, but the tools exist for other distros as well. I need a couple of tools in particular: the DeDRM tool for python2.7 and wine. On wine, we will install Adobe Digital Editions, python and pip for windows
Install wine and winetricks because we will run Adobe Digital Editions in wine. By default ubuntu19.10 intalled wine 4 on my machine. Its easier to upgrade to wine5 first. ADE works so much better with wine5.
To be sure, this is quite a few steps. However, ADE is not a good reader, and the reading experience using wine even worse. I disagree that removing DRM is not legal; for personal use it's perfectly fine to remove DRM from your purchased ebooks. Publishers, of course, have an interest in reducing and controlling access to the material. EFF has some interesting articles on DMCA, DRM, and copyright. Have fun reading.
Then, install the file you dowloaded from Adobe (It was ADE_4.5_Installer.exe, for me), in the Wine virtual Window. If you don't know how to use wine, see this doc: How to install and use Wine on Linux
Third solution: If you failed to install virtual machine or open with Wine, and if you really need this program, install a dual boot on your computer Windows/Linux. How to dual boot Windows/linux on the same computer
Side note (may not be generally applicable to Digital Editions users): Stated in the agreement (may be of concern in making a program to access .acsm ) for Adobe Content Server section 11.1 you agree not to:
Sometimes a "file association" error occurs on your computer, which prevents Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) from opening downloaded ebooks. If you're having trouble opening ebooks in ADE, try the steps below to make sure that your computer opens ACSM files (which are used to download ebooks) in Adobe Digital Editions.

This wikiHow article teaches you how to use Adobe Digital Editions to open Adobe Content Server Message (.acsm) ebooks on Windows and macOS. ACSM files don't contain the text from the ebook. Instead, they contain data that tells Adobe Content Server that the book was legally purchased or rented. Once this has been confirmed, you can download the book in EPUB or PDF format using Adobe Digital Editions.
My Adobe Digital Editions will not open acsm files on either my chromebook or android phone any more. I have deauthorized, uninstalled, reintalled, and reauthorized ADE multiple times without change. I have wiped and reinstalled the operating system on the Chromebook, and that had no effect. Dragging and dropping the acsm file into ADE does nothing. When I right-click and choose 'open with' ADE is not an available option, despite having set ADE to open associated file types in the settings.
This problem arose within the last week or so (I noticed it on Saturday when I tried to open a new book), and I cannot find anything online that helps. I am currently on Chromebook OS version 109.0.5414.125 and ADE version 4.5.11.187425. I have exactly the same problem on my Pixel 5a, which is running Android 13, although I have not wiped and reinstalled the OS on that device.
So far, it is still a problem on all my devices, but I did find that, cx file explorer, which is a 3rd party android file manager, does recognize that acsm files are associated with ADE and will allow me to open those files.
I'm still rather unhappy with this workaround, but I can at least get it to work. It suggests to me that it is Android/Chromebook's file manager that may be at fault. But, having wiped and reinstalled the whole OS on my chromebook, it also suggests that ADE is not associating itself properly with acsm files either.
My Adobe Digital Edition is both authorised on my computer and on my ebook reader (kobo). I am on Windows 10 and had to reinstall ADE since I upgraded recently. When I rent a book from a digital library, it sends me an .acsm file that I was normally opening with ADE.. Now everything is set like before and when I open an .acsm file, nothing happens and the menu items are greyed-out and the book never show up. If I start ADe and just try to look what books are on my reader, it's fine but when I try to open an .acsm things gett ugly. I thought maybe I need to reauthorise my computer, so did the process again, but still had the same issue. I reinstalled ADE, made the authorisation but still have the same issue.
At this poins, I have looked online several hours but couldn't find a solution to my problem so I am asking on this forum. Maybe it's a compatibility issue with Windows 10, but right now I'm out of option.
Sometimes the library doesn't show up, after 3-4 tries, it sometimes display but as soon as I try something it goes away. That's a pretty strange situation and at this point I'm desperate. I need a solution.
I spent many hours trying to get downloaded books to show up in ADE, to no avail. I have Windows 10. I tried uninstall ADE, reinstall, erase authorization, delete the suggested HKEY, etc. Still, presented with a blank ADE screen under the ribbon. No books.
WHAT WORKED FOR ME, per Nanaky's suggestion, was to close ADE and then rename My Digital Editions in Documents in This PC (I simply renamed it My Digital Editions_old). Next time I fired up ADE, it recreates a new My Digital Editions and all is well. I see all the books loaded into KOBO again and can finally download new books from the Ontario Library again into the KOBO Aura. Note that you should previously have set up and opened OverDrive with email and a password (instead of using your library card number), and then authorized your PC and your Kobo by selecting OverDrive (instead of Adobe ID) and using the same email and password. That way everything is linked together properly.
Hello, after wasting the better part of 2 days trying to get ADE to open my acsm ebook, i downloaded KBO free. It opened my ebook flawlessly. I don't suggest wasting time with ADE. That is Adobe's job, not ours!
Back in 2013 I setup a Windows 7 virtual machine with Adobe Digital Editions v2.0.1.78765, which I used exclusively for turning ACSM files into EPUB files. A few months ago I was finally able to retire that VM thanks to the discovery of libgourou, which is both a library and a suite of utilities that can be used to work with ACSM files.
In the world of electronic media, DRM technology is very important, because unlike analog information, digital content such as software, films, audio recordings, documents and books can, by nature, easily be reproduced and redistributed. This cripples the underlying business model, creating a situation, which is unsustainable for creators and copyright owners. For commercial digital publishers, the use of DRM systems to regulate access to protected intellectual property is therefore essential.
The ACSM file is the first file the customer uses after making their purchase since it is the only file they can download at first. To open the ACSM file, as well as having an Adobe ID, the customer must also have installed the Adobe Digital Editions software on their system and linked it with their Adobe ID. Adobe Digital Editions then verifies the ID in order to check if the user is authorized to convert the ACSM file. If authorization is granted, the user can download their e-book in ePUB or PDF format. Adobe Digital Editions also uses the ACSM file to identify the download directory.
