Hi all,

Just got a chance to look at the spreadsheet and and perhaps my suggestions are too late, but I'm presenting them as something for the subcommittee to consider if appropriate.

Suggestions:

1) In crop diversity, I'm wondering if it might make sense to say "cultivars" and/or "genotypes" instead of/or in addition to "varieties" in Crop Diversity #15 - I just think this is more specific.

2) I'm also wondering if "mitigation of annual crop loss over time" might be worth adding to "higher average net return over time" in Crop Diversity #16. Perhaps it sounds redundant, but this suggestion is based on situations such as the Southern corn leaf blight epidemic of 1970 which was the catastrophic consequence of growers planting a single crop genotype, and growers in the Northeast who were hit hard by late blight on Solonacious crops in 2010 by a pathogen that doesn't affect other crops. It seems to me that avoiding the potential for unexpected economic loss is just as important as promoting economic gain.

3) This may be something that is covered by #18, but I thought we had discussed limiting use of pest (weed/disease/insect) control measures through scouting/threshold levels, and the use of diverse methods (chemical and non-chemical); as well as limiting exposure of pest populations to any one particular class of pesticide chemistry in order to avoid resistance. This is certainly an economic issue, and something that could be measured quite easily.

Anyway, sorry if this is all coming too late.

Taylor

Hi, Taylor.  Thanks for the comments.  It's not too late; we have until 2/17 to finalize this, as we heard today.  I think that I could capture 1 and 2 in the econ criteria table.  Regarding 3, many practices that affect environmental and social performance will have economic effects, both positive and negative, and we've tried to capture that in the diversity criteria, but it seems better to me to leave the definition of the pest management criteria to the environmental CDSC.  Other thoughts on this or other topics are very welcome.  Thanks again and regards,

Don
