How can a Scrum Master facilitate the most appropriate decision (timeboxed) which is based on consensus, within a context in which two Senior Developers, based on data acquired during the sprint, are arguing over the pros and cons of their solution that they put forward. What is the best way of facilitating such a discussion so that the best solution can be realised at the

If the solution isn't obvious, either flip a coin or try them both. It's not about getting it right, it's about getting feedback. The truth will make itself known...

On the C3 project, our rule was that “Whenever two or more developers argue over the approach to take, the matter must be settled by an experiment.”

What that comes down to is that those two devs work together to test both solutions, in a short pair of experiments. We’d typically allow a half day, maybe a full day, for both experiments.

Pro tip: If you can, always let the other guy go first. If his solution works out, you can be gracious. If it doesn’t, you get to save the day. :)

What's the risk?   Could it be that both are potential solutions?  

Helping to get agreement for the experiment to test which way to go might be the easiest.  

Also, not assuming there is one right answer will help.
