I'm running Scripto on Omeka. I've added the MediaWiki toolbar to my instance of MW, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to make it show up in the Scripto edit page in Omeka. I saw in the War Dept Papers site that they call MediaWikiToolbar.js in the head of the transcription page; where do I have to make changes to add this to the head? And is that's all that's necessary to get the toolbar to show up?

Thanks!

Miles

Miles,

The toolbar is a tricky thing. Both the original edit toolbar and the toolbar that comes with the WikiEditor extension are coupled so tightly to MediWiki that it's near impossible to integrate them into a separate application. What you're seeing in Papers of the War Department is a hack, which is fine since it's using a unique implementation of Scripto. I'm not at all comfortable releasing distributed software with a hack. In any case, it would break the Omeka plugin and could possibly conflict with Omeka's JavaScript environment.

Even so, we recognize that an editor toolbar would improve the user experience quite a bit. I'm currently looking into alternatives.

Hi Jim,

Did you find an alternative solution for the toolbar issue?

Thanks,

Sam

I have not, for the reasons described above. MediaWiki is working on a rich-text editor [1], but it's not clear how compatible it will be in third-party environments.

Hi Jim,

I'd like to use a rich text editor with Scripto. Is this possible now? I'd appreciate any suggestions and/or news you have.

Thanks in advance,
Anneliese

Unfortunately not. MediaWiki has new VisialEditor extension [1], but it cannot be used outside the MediaWiki interface, as far as I can tell. We are just beginning a new project to update Scripto for Omeka S [2], which will likely include a simple wikitext toolbar. We'll backport this toolbar to previous versions of Scripto once it is finished.
