Dear Pamela:
It would seem that you are talking about my version, but I can't tell for sure. You mention the plants looking a horrible and you suggest making them green; I have done this, so maybe you are talking about Coleman's version, which is designed more for the supercomputer platform. Anyway, aesthetics are the last things on our minds for the Scriptbots sim, but the fact that it's open source is really it's best feature. I know about the Evolites sim, and it's great and all, with decent graphics, but I prefer the "natural" development of "intelligence" from simple rules.

As for making a save-load capable version available as compiled program, I feel that decision is up to Karpathy. Perhaps I will compile mine and release it, but as of now I'm not 100% sure that it's working as best as it can. I continue to work on it anyway. Sorry I can't offer anything better, tho.

Hello Pamela,

It's been a long time, but you may be interested to know that I now have a stable executable version of Scriptbots, which includes a user interface, saving and loading, graphical updates, and an adjustable settings config file. It is part of my release version on Github, located here: https://github.com/GhengopelALPHA/scriptbots/tree/release

If you're still interested in the sim, just download the Release.zip, it contains everything you'll need to run the program. If you have any errors, please message me!

Honestly I started to lose interest in scriptbots as soon as I could no longer get it to build on linux. The use of glui is what broke it for me. Yes I could try to strip that stuff out but it would be a big hassle. If I do get back into it I will probobly go back to the version that didn't use glui. Hershey, would you consider making scriptbots able to build on linux? I did want to try and do some optimization to get rid of the O(n2) that slows down the simulation.

Hi Nicholas,

I looked at your suggestions of Qt and (I'm not sure what the other one was, I'm not able to access that thread at this moment), and they looked quite challenging to utilize. With glui I found it easy because it is literally built from GLUT, but as you've found it's unfortunately not supported by Linux.

Now, I am only a hobbyist, but if I had the knowledge to make the program ignore the glui requirement if its on an incompatible system, I'd be willing to attempt to update my version to build with glui only when possible. Unfortunately gaining such knowledge is a time-consuming process that has no real guarantee of success, but I will try. Getting more people active and interested in scriptbots is almost the number one goal, with the first being of course finding unique and amazing results from the program. If you have any skill or knowledge in this matter (of making platform-dependent code, ignoring certain libraries in certain cases, etc) I'd love your help!

As for considering another gui alternative, that's really not something I'm keen on doing at the moment. It took a lot of work to get this system to function. A lot of work. For anyone who's an expert programmer I'm sure they could make a new gui in a few months, but I am only a hobbyist.
