I have recently acquired responsibility for my church library. There
is no catalog of any kind. I estimate there to be about 2200 books,
with many duplicates. There's also at least 100 videos and at least
50 audio items. I'd like to catalog at least the books, and I am
looking at Scriblio for this. Is Scriblio a reasonable choice? The
church website is currently hosted at Yahoo, which only has PHP 4, but
we are planning to move the site this month. I am also the webmaster
for the church website, and installed WordPress on the youth group
portion of the site over a year ago, so I am familiar with WordPress.

I have a recent version of XAMPPlite installed on my home computer,
and have made a new WordPress installation with Scriblio, bSuite,
scriblio-connector-iii, scriblio-connector-marcfile, scriblio-
connector-openamazooglething, and scriblio-schema-cid. I also found
the default Scriblio theme and installed it. I've activated Scriblio,
bSuite, and Scriblio Community Information Database. I tried to
activate Scriblio OpenAmazOogleThing Connector, but received 2 errors,
so I deactivated it again; I believe they're the same as described in
this post http://groups.google.com/group/scriblio/browse_thread/thread/4c78af1b5ae54c30.

I still can't figure out how to get my data into Scriblio. I'm
looking for something that will allow me to type in the author, title,
and other information. Does such a creature exist, or do I have to
import MARC files? If so, how do I create the MARC files? I have no
library software and a minimal budget. I am also new to library
automation terminology, so acronymn definitions would be helpful.
Thank you for your help!

Hi Nancy,

I'm just a lurker on this list and I've only dabbled with Scriblio, but I am pretty sure it assumes there is an Integrated Library System running in the background from which it obtains catalog records, and which handles activities such as borrowing.  The install page at the Scriblio website indicates the ILS connector step is optional if you're using it for a digital archive, but there doesn't seem to be any documentation on how to use it for such purposes, and you're cataloging books, anyhow, so I don't know that it would help you if it existed.

Hopefully someone who knows Scriblio better than I can pipe up with better advice if I am wrong about this.  In the meantime, here are some resources you might check out if you have not already.

Open Source Integrated Library Systems:
http://www.koha.org
http://www.evergreen-ils.org

Inexpensive commercial library software package (I understand it's popular in church libraries):
http://www.resourcemate.com/

MARC editing/creation tools:
http://people.oregonstate.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html/index.php
http://www.loc.gov/marc/makrbrkr.html

Online Dictionary of Library and Information Science (good for acronyms):
http://lu.com/odlis/index.cfm

Hope this helps!

-Marijane

Marijane,

That is really helpful. That explains why all the documentation I'd
found discussed searching methods but said nothing about getting the
data into the system. I'm learning PHP and MySQL and could probably
write something that would do the job, but I'm not confident I could
make it secure and would not want it online where anyone could get to
it. And I want something that a non-technical person could use if
necessary. Thanks for all the links; I will check them out.

Hi Nancy -

I can't answer your question directly, but I have seen other entries
in the group that do describe using Scriblio for creating new records,
not just importing. So don't give up just yet! - Lisa

As an archives, we manually input data so I know from that perspective
it can be done. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do the same
thing with library items. We use the New catalog entry under posts
and fill in all applicable fields.
Hope this helps,
Kelli

That's funny, I never thought to see if anything had been added to the
posts section. I was looking for a special Scriblio section in the
control panel, or something in the Scriblio settings area -- that's
what all the other plugins I've used have done. Sure enough, there's
a new item in the posts section to add catalog data. But it doesn't
display properly with WordPress 2.8.5, so I tried using 2.7. I never
downloaded 2.7.1 to my computer, and the closest I can find on the
WordPress site is 2.7.1 RC1; is that the same? Then I get a bunch of
"Deprecated: Assigning the return value of new by reference is
deprecated in ..." messages which refer to several different WordPress
files, and the control panel doesn't work. Found a post on the
WordPress site that says the problem is PHP 5.3.0. Checked the
probable new host, and they have PHP 5.2.9, so installed that on my
computer. After a comedy of errors, got that to working. But the New
Catalog Record entry still has display problems -- some fields and
labels are displayed on top of each other. There's far more data here
than I care about, too. It doesn't look like Scriblio is really what
I want. Thanks, everyone, for your help!
