Linking files

Hi! I've only just started linking files to my cards (! Why did I
never do this before?!). My understanding of how this is working is
that the file gets somehow imported into scribe, and then to access it
through Scribe I need to "export" it. Is there some way to link files
so I can just open them from the source card, without having to export/
end up with multiple copies on the desktop?
