Number of Document Reads

I have embedded several documents using the Javascript API. I am using
the PHP getStats() method to pull in the number of document reads. It
does not increment the reads when I embed a document. Instead the only
way the reads value gets incremented is by visiting the actual
document on Scribd.

Is there some sort of method I could call to get this reads variable
to increase? Or will I need to keep track of it on my own in a MySQL
database (this may be the easiest). Seems weird though to have the
getStats() method for reads if they don't increment using the embed
feature.

These documents are set to private so people would never really be
visiting the actual Scribd document page.
