Hi,

I was wondering whether it is possible to disable or even hide/remove
the 'Share this' functionality accessible through the 'Facebook,
Twitter icon' in the reader for private documents.
I haven't found anything in the API. Especially for private documents
the option of sharing the document doesn't make a lot of sense, since
the document was made private for a reason in the first place. Also,
even when clicking on the sharing option the functionality is not
available for private documents.

Thanks + Regards,

Steve

I totally agree, and was going to get to the point soon of asking this same question. The same goes for the "More" menu, which has the option to upload. We definitely want to get rid of that, since we're controlling the uploading process through the API because, well, that's part of our business case.

...another vote for being able to disable the "More" menu option and
"Share This" functionality -- crucial for using the API securely when
displaying private docs!

Indeed. I asked about this on July 22nd on this list and was told something would be coming. But no timeframe was given. Below is a review of the conversation.

*** ME ***
There are a few things in the UI that dont make sense with private
documents. Most of these things are in the "more" menu. For example,
"email to friend", "embed", and the "more" menu item in the more menu.
At the top level of the UI the scribd link doesnt make sense for a
private document.

The good news is none of these things work when a document is private.
The bad news is that they are there at all. I am wondering if there is
a way to turn these items off for private items. I'd also like to turn
on uploading since we have our own private mechanism for uploading
that is secure, since using the upload mechanism in the menu would
create a public document, which we want to avoid.

The "scribd" link at the top of the menu does not work, which is good,
but the rollover says that it will, which of course creates confusion.

So I am hoping I can encourage you to make these small UI changes for
private documents that would make things feel safer and clearer.

Thanks
Hank

Hi Hank,

Great points!  We are going to make a lot of these changes in the next version of iPaper.

Best,

Thanks Jared,

Do you have any idea how far away your new version is?

Hi Hank,

I do, but we don't disclose product roadmaps :)  However, I can tell you that the next version is going to look more like the streamlined iPaper interface you see on Scribd.com currently, and we're working on it right now.

Best,
Jared

Looks like this is mostly addressed now in the new JavaScript viewer
(thanks, Scribd guys!).

One further suggestion, since all of the individual sharing options
appear to be correctly disabled now for private docs, why not just
suppress the twitter/facebook icons/link shown at the upper-right of
the viewer for private docs? Otherwise, users click on them and then
find that nothing there works for the private doc anyway...

Thanks,
Daryl

Hey Daryl,

Yep, you're absolutely right.  Will be there in next push.

Totally agree (again).

Also, while the downlink is now defaulted to disabled for private docs, which is good, we should still be able to turn it on if we want (thereby making the only access to downlink the docs via our applications).

Awesome - it would be nice if everything that was disabled was simply
hidden.

Fullscreen link is the same way, even though I've disabled it the link
is still there and blue, so users have the impression that it is
active. Would be nice to hide this, the social sharing buttons, and
the download link.

On a side note - will there be an option to disable printing as well?

Thanks for all the hard work. iPaper continues to get better with
every release!
