I have two Drupal books

"Using Drupal" which is a how-to-bolt-modules together book. Great for a web admin types and for an overview but no use at all if you want to start writing your own modules.

"Pro Drupal Development" 2nd Ed. John K VanDyk. The Drupal developers bible. But, conversely, completely unsuitable if you don't want to get under the hood.

So two good books but for two completely different audiences.

Thanks for the links Jim. Do either of these cover theming in any great depth? I see that there is another book dedicated to theming and wondered if this was worth a look?

I think it may actually be the Drupal 5 version of the same book <http://bit.ly/1Gop8M

though (our copy is currently being used to prop up a colleague's
monitor), Drupal theming is incredibly simple, and not something that
requires a book, if writing a theme from scratch, just hack the
Garland or Xen themes.

Charles,

Both books I mention contain a chapter on theming and both will give you an understanding of how the theming system works. I wouldn't have described it as incredibly simple, from my brief brush with it, but maybe it is once you know it. For the time being these chapters are enough for me and I wouldn't plan to buy a book just on theming.

Jim.
