I would like to invite you to a GeoGebra night for parents on Tuesday, June 29th, at 7pm, at my house 309 Silvercliff Trail, Cary. Children who are interested in grown-up style activities or want to hang out are always welcome. GeoGebra, a free software with a great support community, is marvelous for kids studying formal geometry or algebra (hence the name), and for general exploration and problem-solving.
Why use this software?
- Email your creations to friends or grandparents, and see what cool
things others made (motivation through community)
- Make animations
and games (deep understanding, motivation)
- "Undo" buttons and
copy-paste greatly reduce tedium and error of paper constructions (focus
on conceptual understanding)
- The ability to "wiggle" (drag around, animate) your constructions
allows to see geometric and algebraic relationships (problem-solving)
-
Visual way of working with algebra (learning styles)
- Good clean
fun for young ones (I've done it with 4yo and up)
I plan to show a couple of my projects, by the way of introduction, which will take about 5 minutes: one just an essay illustration ("flow channel") and another a set of interactive diagrams for alternative origami axioms. Then we will use laptops or netbooks, which you should bring if you have one, to explore and to share. I will take steps toward making explorations comfortable for everybody, regardless of computer literacy level. If you feel like it, bring some finger food (clean - laptops!) for a snack.
Please let me know if you are coming, and how many people you are bringing.
Cheers,
Maria Droujkova
