Dear Friends and Comrades:
With the referral of my recent privilege speech on "Dangerous Trends in US-Philippine Relations to the House of Representatives' Committee on Foreign Affairs, a series of hearings on the issue has been set for the next few weeks. The first, to be held on Tuesday, Feb 21, will feature government witnesses witnesses and resource persons. The dates for the second and, possibly, third, hearings still have to be set, but they are likely to be held before the House takes its break on March 26. These succeeding sessions will hear from resource persons from civil society, academia, and popular sectors.
The aim of the hearings is to shed light on recent developments in US-Philippine relations, few details of which have been shared by the administration with Congress and the citizenry. No substantive hearings on the US role in the Philippines have been held for sometime now, so
the upcoming hearings present a golden opportunity to extract information that the public has rights to.
Topics covered in my speech that will be the subject of the hearings include the content of US-Philippine diplomatic and military negotiations, the US refocusing of its global strategy on Asia and specifically on the West Philippine Sea, US assistance to the Philippines, including bases' upgrading, the Chinese response to the recent developments in the US-Philippine military alliance, the possible use of Philippine military bases for CIA rendition of terrorist suspects to third countries, the status of the US military presence and activities in Mindanao, and the possible employment of US drones in the recent attack on an alleged terrorist hideout in Jolo.
The hearings will be held 130 to 4 pm, Tuesday, Feb 21, at Rms 3 and 4 of Mitra Hall. Those interested in attending can contact my office at 931 5001, Ext 7292.
In
solidarity,
Walden Bello Member, House of Representatives
