I think using the same symbol to begin and end encryption will make users uncomfortable, because there is always the risk (real or imagined, it doesn't matter so far as user fears are concerned) that
I will turn off encryption when I intend to turn it on. It certainly makes me stop and think about whether I've got it right.

I suggest using ## to begin encryption and $$ to end encryption. They are next to each other on the keyboard, straight after @ with ## coming before $$

It's an interesting point. We hope to make these delimiters a customizable setting some day. For the present we've been focused on simplicity. Currently if you don't provide a closing delimiter we just encrypt through to the end of the text.

Perhaps the real issue is ensuring people know what to expect. We've considered putting a "preview" button on the toolbar. This could be clicked to show how the text box will encrypt before posting it to the web. You can accomplish the same thing by just taking focus away from the text box by clicking anywhere else on the page, such as the page background, but that has been hard to explain.
