Hi Prairie Activists, Friends and supporters,
Happy summer, hope you are all able to take in some sunshine while you keep up the good fight for environmental justice and healthy communities :-)
I wanted to let you know of some transitions that are happening at the Sierra Club Prairie chapter. After 6 months as the water campaigner and a year and a half as the Director I will be leaving my role to pursue law studies and add some new skills and expertise to my tool box. However I do plan to remain in Alberta until January and will continue to be an active member of the Prairie activist community, particularly as an SCP member and volunteer. :-)
That said I am very happy to announce that Jasmine Thomas will be taking over the role as Director for our organization! Jasmine comes with a host of experience working with communities across the country on issues of Indigenous sovereignty, environmental contamination and food & water security. Jasmine has also been heavily involved in the
Canadian Indigenous Tar Sands Campaign at regional, provincial, national and international levels. She is skilled as an organizer, campaigner and diplomat as she has had to travel the world confronting the onslaught of governments and companies that continue to try to push toxic developments within communities here in Canada. Jasmine will be moving from her home town in Vanderhoof, BC to Edmonton and is will official begin with us on September 5th. I look forward to the expertise and energy that Jasmine will bring to the Sierra Club Prairie and I hope you will join me in welcoming her to the organization!
Until September 5th, our lovely and passionate associate director Chelsea Flook will be taking on the director responsibilities in the interim. She can be reached directly at
chel...@sierraclub.ca and/or
780-722-1226. I will also be around for the next few weeks, however I will be focused on transitioning out with my final day being July 31st. That said, you can always reach me at
780-660-0312 and/or
sheila...@gmail.com :-)
Finally our Energy Campaigner Dustin Johnson will also be leaving us as of July 31st. Dustin has been with the Sierra Club for a little over a year. His work has been a huge contribution to building the grassroots network of folks in Alberta opposed to Tar Sands, particularly in building new relationships between activists in the city centers of Edmonton and Lethbridge and those in the Peace Region, Ft. McMurray, Cold Lake, Alexander and Kai Nai. He was central in Sierra Club Prairie's participation in opposing
Total's Joslyn Mine as well as the facilitation of
Bucket Brigade training with communities concerned with their air quality. Dustin was featured in OilWeek as one of the
Green Grinches, winning 4 out of 5 grinches for opposing the tar sands industry. We would have loved to keep him around, but he is intent on heading back to BC to continue on with the good fight against plans for tar sands pipeline development and tanker traffic along the BC Coast. Please join me in thanking Dustin for his contribution to the prairie environmental justice movement and sending him off with love on his next journeys!
And thanks once again to all of you as our supporters, volunteers and allies. I look forward to seeing Sierra Club Prairie continue to play a central role in base building and activism for environmental justice and healthy communities.
In solidarity and love,
--
Sincerely,
Sheila Muxlow
