Let Rex Murphy know what you think of the tar sands!
Rex
Murphy's Cross Country Checkup is heading to Fort McMurray, Alberta to
do a live radio segment on "What is the role of the oilsands in Canada's
future?" and we want you to phone in and let the country know what you
think! Also, if you are in the Fort McMurray area, do consider attending
the session as admission is free!
The show's description addresses the environmental degradation and
threat that the tar sands pose to combating climate change. It also
raises the "energy superpower" feel-good messaging of the government and
industry. Worse, the description repeats the myth that Alberta's tar
sands is the economic engine of Canada, powering us through a recession.
It asks about finding a balance between economic interests and
environmental interests.
But where is the mention of Treaty rights and impacts on First
Nations peoples? What about the mess industry is leaving Albertan's?
What about cumulative impacts? What about the questionable approvals
process? What about the recent study regarding the failed reclamation
efforts? What about the Caribou recovery strategy? What about the
impacts on water?
If you want to join in on the conversation, mark your calendars and consider attending or phoning in!When: Sunday March 18, 2012 - Live 2 pm to 4 pm Mountain Time
Where: Main Concourse at The Suncor Community Leisure Centre, MacDonald Island Park
Tune in at CBC Radio One 99.3 FM (Sirius 159) (CBXN-FM Edmonton) to follow the discussion and call
