From MSFT's side, I think it's more about adding value to their already excellent Xbox Live Gold service, and if they attract more customers to subscribe to Gold because of the features they're adding, great.

On the other hand, I've been a cord cutter for years. Why pay for a ton of content I don't care about when I can get most of the content I want for free? The rest of the content I want can either be watched via my quite cheap streaming-only Netflix account or by purchasing DVDs.

This Verizon FiOS deal doesn't do much for me. It's much the same as the Hulu deal with MSFT where you can only access the Hulu content on XBL Gold if you subscribe to Hulu Plus (which I have no reason or desire to do). Because the cable companies refuse to change, they're becoming irrelevant.

Yeah, well, it might not do a lot of that. I picked up an xbox at a garage sale with the intention of using it solely for streaming netflix. I didn't know that you had to subscribe to MS's service to be able to do that. It angered me, as Netflix doesn't (or shouldn't) actually use the xbox live service, doesn't add any value to the netflix service, almost doubles the cost of the service, and I'd get to give yet more money to Microsoft in exchange for exactly nothing.

The xbox went to the goodwill, and I've warned a few other people who were thinking of doing the same thing to avoid using the xbox for it. If Microsoft was a little less greedy, they may have actually sold me some games and made some money from me, instead of leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

I think you vastly underestimate how much you'd pay on an a la carte basis for the niche channels you list. AMC Networks has operating expenses of about $750 million. They obviously get revenue from ad sales, but the bulk of their revenue comes from cable operators. If instead of receiving payments from the 96 million US households that get AMC programming, they had to be paid by the households that actually want AMC programming (their highest-rated program, The Walking Dead, drew 6.6 million viewers Sunday night), the costs would be very high.

Cable providers just don't git it. All there off brand channels are only financially successful because of bundling channels. If you AMC's viewership is 96 Million, just think how few other really off brand cable channels reach.

I cut the cord about 2-3 years ago. Subscribed to NetFlix. Haven't looked back, doubt I will. Wake me up with HBO and Showtime(the only two cable offerings I really miss) are available w/o a monthly subscription to the crap that currently goes with them, and I'm in.

Would like to make a post about xbox .During the summer I paid for internet for the house so my boys had a gold membership that stopped in august .I find out today that my credit card has been charged the last 2 months for live which we do not use nor new we had .I run my laptop off my phone .If you think you have to have live I would wipe out your credit card info from your unit as I was told by Microsoft ANYONE can get into it and you to will be paying someone's funtime .Microsoft being the greedy people they are would of course not refund my money .

I'm a bit confused by the article. I think the author is ranting a little too much against cable companies and just not appreciating what is happening here. Picture this: Your house doesn't have every single room wired with a coaxial cable. You don't want to spend a ton of money wiring your house. You've got a room you would like your kids to watch Nick, Nick Jr, or Cartoon Network but this room has no coaxial. Now here's where it gets interesting. Your Xbox 360 is streaming live TV through the Internet. This isn't pre-recorded data files sitting on a Netflix or Hulu server. This is LIVE TV being streamed straight to your Xbox 360 through Wfi. In other words, this is (as far as I know) the first time you've been able to watch cable TV wirelessly. Sure there's the added expense of Xbox Live Gold but you can get those cards cheap if you look for discounts/sales AND you're not renting a cable box for $5-$10 a month.

Hi guys. The Microsoft Edge is my favorite browser of all times, really, but not when I try to watch netflix or other video streaming services, it always breaks, I have no ideia what to do anymore. Always when I try to play something there's an error and then I need to reload over and over again, sometimes even when I just play the video it stop working when I try to play again. Help me to keep using this best browser that I've ever seen.

I've ever tried to disable hardware acceleration, enable DRM content, install Microsoft Silverlight and a lot of other things, but I didn't get to watch so far without an error I keep receiving these error codes: D7356-7701 and others related. Is there's still something that can be done to really fix theses erros or I just have to be patient and wait for news versions of the browser?

WANT TO REVERT TO THE OLD NETFLIX HERES HOW- if your like me (and pretty much everyone ive talked to you hate teh new netflix interface. why they literally screwed up everthing about it i dont know. but the good news is the old netflix app is still on your xbox and you can still use it.

STEP 1 hit the xbox button and goto the gams tab and select quickplay, then goto the al tab on the right and scroll down till you find the old netflix app (it should be a little white flim strip in th emiddle not the shiny red on at the top) select this now. you should get an error message but jsut click ok

STEP 2 now you should be at a netflix screen that tells you theres and error and you need to register netflix on this console and it should have the register code in the background covered by the error message.leave it on this screen and then

STEP 3 go online to your netflix account and click on the YOUR ACCOUNT & HELP link at the top rigth. it will bring you to the accpunt page scroll down a little bit and under the WATCHING INSTANTLY ON YOUR TV OR COMPUTER section click the MANAGE NETFLIX READY DEVICES AND COMPUTERS LINK. then click the disconnect device button and confirm

STEP 4 finally got back to your xbox (which should be on the netflix screen with the error message and the option to TRY AGAIN click this now and it shoudl remove the error mesage and show you the registration code enter this now on your computer and presto the Old (and much better) netflixs app.

you can use either app now without having to do all that stuff again but you can only access the old netflix app through the quickplay option. if you click on the netflix icon it will brign you to the new (and annoying) one. its so sad that we have to do this they shoudl simlpy give us the option of which we want to use but they would rather force the new on on us anyways ENJOY GUYS and thumbs up if you found this usefull

Regardless, absolute credit to Fleshpuppet for this info. I'm creating the thread that way people who don't like the new Netflix have an idea how to get their beloved previous version back. Unfortunately, no fix for the new Dashboard...probably won't be =/

However, if you were already on the old Netflix you can stay on it for as long as you wish to keep your Xbox console running...so at least you can get a few final moments with the old setup before wishing it farewell (unless you're one of the lucky few it doesn't corrupt for).

OH wll not 10 hours after i posted this they disabled it. WHY i ask you, do they care if i want to use their old interface. it wasnt hurting anythgin by allowing me to use the older (and far greater) program espically since its on my xbox still just sitting there on my harddrive. this is like cyber facisim. i dont like the new version and im not just shouting whiney non sese complaints but i had VALID reasons and it jsut a dick thign to do. so even though ive been and XBOX LIVE subscriber since the original xbox and even though i jsut puurchased an xbox kinect bundle for christmas. i will be returning it and canceling my subscription. turning off my auto renew and gettign a netflix box from netflix.com. i know they dont care and that to them it doesnt matter but i was a diehard xbox fanboy and now i hate the service. PLEASE i urge yo uto call 18004myxbox and let them know your displeasure and perhaps they will fix at least this but i doubt it.

As most Xbox 360 owners know (at least those that have an Xbox Live! account) the new Xbox Live! interface went live today. This update completely revamps the interface adding a number of features like 8 person chat and Avatars. More importantly, for those with a Netflix account, Netflix streaming of movies has been made available. This editorial will be a short review of the interface changes and a more in-depth one of Netflix streaming.

The interface has been completely revamped from a more tab based with limited options on the screen to what looks to be subsequent screens fading off into the distance. This actually makes more information available to users at one time. The overall look of the interface is much improved with much better graphics and integration of your chosen theme. Flipping through the different screens is mostly quick though it does seem to make the entire interface a bit more clunky. There are a number of categories including:

With all the new features, it would be nice to have a "favorites" list under My Xbox to simplify things, though that probably would mean that much of the additional advertising... er... content would be missed by the average user. One thing I did like was that when you disconnected the controller, the interface didn't immediately lock up until you turned on the controller. While this isn't a big deal for casual user (to adjust settings or navigate menus) but when you are watching a video, saving those batteries for more important things than just being ready to pause a video is paramount.

Owing more than a little to the Wii and their Miis, the Avatars are customizable "people" that represent you on Xbox Live. I thought that I would hate the little dudes but really, I don't. They look much more grown up than the Miis (less big-headed). You can customize their size, shape, color, clothes, and accessories. You can also save outfits so that you can switch them easier (in case your Avatar is going to a formal dinner I guess). The most extensive options are in the Avatar's features such as eyes, nose, mouth, etc. with a fairly limited number of clothes available. I was able to quickly put together three different outfits and saved them depending on my mood. It was easy to do and actually pretty fun. There is a photo option that lets you pose your Avatar and use them as your Gamer Picture. Of course, you can still use the Gamer Pictures you downloaded if you prefer.
