G’day everyone,
The fires are out, the National Parks are re-opening, and the weather is warming up... It must be time to go canyoning!
The 2013 incarnation of our annual Region Canyoning Weekend will be different to previous years. We have a new set of Activity Qualifications (SIS10), and this will be the first time that we have run a canyoning weekend under these qualifications. As such, the weekend is a bit of a test case.
Participants will be required to meet at Barcoo Swamp on Newnes Plateau by 07:30am on Saturday 6 December. Many people will arrive the night before. Barcoo Swamp is the green arrow on this map: http://goo.gl/maps/PIRb0 . Leaving Lithgow, you follow the Glow Worm Tunnel Road until it narrows, and you then turn right onto Galah Mountain Fire Trail (it is right at the end of the State Forest and start of Wollemi National Park). You follow that for 200m and then turn right into the Barcoo Swamp camping area (not signposted).
We will split into three groups of 6 participants each. This means that numbers are capped at 18 participants. We will have one group of six beginners, that being people that have not canyoned before. We will have two groups of six participants that have some form of experience. Each group will be lead by two Activities Team members either qualified, or in the process of being qualified, in SIS10.
All participants will be required to bring their own equipment as for a 'standing camp.' That being tents, food, cooking gear, etcetera. A day pack will be required for the canyoning activities each day. The day pack should as a minimum contain a packed lunch, water (2L), sun cream, personal first aid kit, hat, head torch and snacks. A 'dry bag' may be used to keep some items dry, plastic bags will not be sufficient. All participants will also need to wear enclosed shoes (Volleys or similar are good, neoprene booties are not suitable for the bushwalks to and from the canyons). A wetsuit will be mandatory. You will change into this after a period of bushwalking. If you feel the cold, it is recommended that you wear thermal underwear under your wetsuit, a beanie or balaclava is also useful. If you have your own helmet, harness prusick loops and descending device, also bring those. You also will be required to assist in carrying rope at some stage over the weekend.
The $20 will cover the cost of using ropes and abseiling equipment supplied by the Region. This cost will apply to all 18 participants and will enable us to purchase new equipment for our aging kit.
Should you have any questions that your Venturer Leader cannot answer, please contact Greg Pearce on 0402 274 130 or Mark Woodard on 0434 668 542.
If you wish to come, please RSVP to g_pe...@tpg.com.au or Mark.W...@stoweaustralia.com.au with a completed A1 and a list of your experience. The closing date will be Friday 29th November.
Selection Process
Unfortunately due to the limited number of trips we are able to run & the expected numbers we will need to have a selection process. The process will be “First in, based on experience”. So as an example, for our more difficult trip, people will be assigned to this group based on when we receive their email & their suitable experience. When we have our 6 for the group, it will be closed and unfortunately any others will miss out. The other trips will be the same.
Please be honest in stating your experience, getting in over your head is not only dangerous to yourself, but to your whole party. As such your Trip Leader will have final veto of the participants on the trip, on the day. Yes, if you say you are superwoman & then turn up with only one leg & a guide dog, you will be asked to sit out!
---
Cheers,
Greg Pearce
