Good morning all,
Another great opportunity for Rovers to get accredited activities qualifications, though a little further away than Cataract (depending where you live). Please pass onto your Rovers and Venturers, and Leaders. More information is on the links below.
Best wishes,
Wal

Subject: Horizon Adventure School, April 2014
Dear Adventurous Activities Commissioners:
In April 2014 we will be running Horizon Adventure School at Bogong Rover Chalet near Falls Creek in Victoria. This is a great opportunity for your Venturers, Rovers and Leaders to get assessed in the core elements of the Cert III & IV Outdoor Recreation. We are asking you to spread the word and encourage any of your Venturers, Rovers, or Leaders who would be interested.
The aim is to get out and about and put all the knowledge and skills into action in a multi-activity journey with scenarios and “road blocks” such as emergencies put in place to assess skills such as people management in remote setting, group leadership in difficult situations etc. It will be great fun and an excellent experience for all involved.
How does it different from the 1st National Adventurous Activities School (January 2014)? We expect that participants will already be competent in the activity, and we'll be focussing on skills and assessments that might otherwise be difficult to achieve. This event would also be a great opportunity for those who could not attend the January School or want to complete qualifications started at the School.
We are asking for expressions of interest by 31 January 2014 from members across Australia who would like to put their skills to the test and gain their Outdoor Recreation quals. Once we have the expression of interest we will finalise the activities. Expressing interest is easy: just send an email to hor...@vicscouts.asn.au detailing what skills you currently have and in one sentence (well short anyway) what you hope to get out of taking part. .
The costs will be around $1,000, which will include food, accomodation, and training materials.
If any of your Activity Leaders would like to take part and spend a fun week at Falls Creek doing adventurous activities we would welcome hearing from them. I'll be at the National Adventurous Activities School at Cataract Park in January if you'd like to discuss in person, or in the meantime for more information you can click onto http://www.vicscouts.com.au/horizon.html; search for 'horizonadventureschool' on Facebook; email hor...@vicscouts.asn.au; or ring me on 0409-165-170.
Sincerely,
Lachlan Shield

[suggested blurb below]
______________________________________________________________
Horizon is an outdoor leadership program designed to extend participants' skills beyond traditional Activity Leader training. The focus will be on people management in remote settings, group leadership in stressful situations, planning and running multi-activity journeys, and dealing with emergencies.
What will you achieve?
Horizon provides a pathway to a Certificate III/IV in Outdoor Recreation by working towards the core units and some electives. It's about providing people with an opportunity to obtain the core units that are sometimes difficult to get. While there will be a theory component, the majority will be practical scenario-based training and assessment in the outdoors.
Who's eligible, and what are the pre-requisites?
Horizon is open to Venturers, Rovers, and Leaders. The main pre-requisite is that you must have technical skills in an adventurous activity at Level 1/Guide level, or demonstrated equivalent skills and experience (for example, Queen's Scout Expeditions, BP Award Ramble, substantial logbook experience, or similar). This activity will particularly suit members with skills in bushwalking, ski touring, canoeing/kayaking, and rock activities, but people with skills in all disciplines are encouraged to apply.
When and where is it?
It will be held at and around the Bogong Rover Chalet, near Falls Creek in Victoria, during the week of Saturday, April 5th to Friday, April 11th, 2014.
What will it cost?
The final cost is yet to be decided but will be in the region of $1,000 (TBC). Victorian members who take part will be eligible for a substantial subsidy from Victorian Branch.

What next?
We're currently seeking expressions of interest to see what sort of units we need to cover. To flag your interest, email Lachlan Shield at hor...@vicscouts.asn.au with a brief outline of your outdoor skills and experience, and one sentence on what you hope to get out of the activity. Lachlan can be contacted on 0409-165-170 should you wish to discuss. Hope to see you there!
