Experience with a bike hike?

One of my Scouts wants to do a bike hike for his Green cord - does anyone have any experience with supervising such a thing? If so, would like to chat.

Here's a first bunch of questions :-) :

- what route did they ride? 

- what preparation did the Scouts do, e.g. a test ride, if so, how long?

- how did they deal with carrying gear?

I did a bike hike as a Scout myself, 170km on-road up and down Mt Warning from the Gold Coast, and it was one of those trips you remember because of all the challenges along the way... Looking for ways to help these Scouts prepare a little better than I did back then :-)
