The Lands of Adventure Camp 2008 is in its final phases of preparation.
Over 100 participants from almost all the European countries actively
involved in the 'Lands of Adventure' programme for Scouts aged 11-15 years
old will be present.
The programme proposed to the participants is centred around the three
elements of Lands of Adventure: "Express EURSelf" communicating beyond
language barriers, "Europe at EURDoor" experiencing other cultures and
"EUR Hopping" live the international partnership.

Educational Methods
13-15 June 2008 near Lisbon, Portugal
The Seminario da Torre d'Aguilha was the venue for meetings of both the
Youth Programme and Adult Resource Core Groups. While both groups
progressed through their own agenda advancing their work on behalf of the
Region, there was also time for working together to ensure one strategic
vision - going forward. The close proximity to the European Region
Committee Meeting also provided a positive contribution from the advice
and support given by many of the Committee and Staff members present.
Since its last meeting, the Youth Programme Core Group has been pleased to
welcome a new member, Juho Toivola from Finland. Juho will replace Hans
Eide (Norway). Due to a change in family circumstances Hans can not devote
himself to the European Region at present, but we thank him for all that
he has given to the Region and wish him well in his Scouting, and also his
personal life.
New Resources available!
Two new resource materials in the area of Adult Resources are now
available for downloading in our Resource Centre.
The Training Systems Toolkit is a major new tool to help associations with
the design and renewal of adult training systems. It is the result of
almost two years work, which included several working sessions, expert
exchanges, research and the gathering of good practices from associations
in 17 countries.
For some time we have been aware of the challenges that many associations
face in ensuring that their training systems are fit for purpose. The
Toolkit has been produced to provide inspiration and assistance to those
who work in the field of adult resources, and specifically for those who
are tasked with the design or renewal of the training systems for adult
volunteers in their association.
The Training Systems Toolkit can be downloaded from the website at:

The material on 'Trends in Volunteering' has been produced to raise
awareness of external trends in Europe that have an impact on how we
recruit, retain and recognise adult volunteers. The document explores how
trends can be threats as well as opportunities. It also serves to remind
associations of the need to track, collect and respond to your own local,
regional and national trends.
Aimed at those involved in the management of adult resources, it is hoped
that the document will help motivate associations to look at the external
trends that affect how adults volunteer and how your association can
respond accordingly, helping to define your future strategic approach to
adult recruitment, retention and recognition.

Have you tasted a new recipe recently? Would you like to try something
from a typical cuisine on the other corner of Europe? You can try this at
the Network meeting on managing Adult Resources. We already have 16
participants from 8 countries, but if you hurry you can grab one of the
remaining places.

Development and Support
News from the Tailored Support Unit
The TSU "met" on a Skype conference early July and discussed the progress
and the next steps with the applications received for support.
In our first TSU-mission we tried to support KFUK-KFUM in Norway in
developing a new strategy plan. Per Ove Lokstad, Secretary General,
considered the mission a success. Per said; "We are on the right train of
thought. I think we will reach a better result with the support rather
than without the support from WOSM Europe. We applied because the offer
fitted with our need for external guidance and support in developing a new
strategy plan which we are going to implement from 2009. We believed that
tailored support could increase the quality of our strategy work. What we
should not forget is that it was inexpensive to ask, which also is of some
importance. We are starting a consultation within the NSA to get as many
members as possible on board, so that the plan is deeply rooted within the
core of the organisation and as many people as possible are devoted to the
content of the plan."
We're convinced that our first mission is not only an important challenge
for the newly created TSU, but it also ended up as a success! We hope that
we can build on this and look forward to supporting other NSO/NSAs in the
future. So if you haven't applied yet and still face a challenge - we're
waiting to assist you!

The next applications that we discussed deal with Albania, FYRO Macedonia
and Croatia. Some of us will meet in Korea and discuss our next steps with
the representatives. We will keep you updated on our progress.

The mobile development team helps you to grow - Best practices from the
last Growth Network
The Growth Network is a good forum to share new ideas and best practices
that help us to grow. Here you can read how the Danish Guide and Scout
Association have tackled the topic of making the membership numbers
increase.
The mobile development team ěRejseholdetî consists of 20 - 30 voluntary
members who support local Scout groups to lead their growth projects. Team
members meet the leaders of the Scout group that has recruited them. The
role of the team is to encourage the leaders of the local group to
identify the good aspects of their group and the dreams about the group's
future. The local group develops a growth project one year long, with
agreed targets. At the end of the project period, a follow-up meeting will
be held to check whether the growth targets were reached. The local groups
have benefited from the work of "Rejseholdet" - they have grown!! The
"Rejseholdet" team meets annually to develop its work. If you want to
learn more about the mobile development team contact Amtoft Lars at:
[ mailto:spe...@am2ft.dk ]spe...@am2ft.dk
Does your association have a success story in growth? We want to
encourage you to share best practices and in this way also help others to
grow. The next Growth Network will take place in Finland, from 6-8
December 2008. Join the Growth Network!

Relationships and Funding
464 is the number of...
... MEPs (members of the European Parliament) who signed the Written
Declaration calling for 2011 to be designated the European Year of
Volunteering. This is a great success and one that all of you who
contacted your MEPs contributed to securing.
The European Conference in Slovenia in May 2007 and the Regional Plan
2007-2010 both call for us to work on securing greater recognition for the
role of volunteers. Volunteering is increasingly being recognised by the
member states of the EU and EEA as a positive contributor to enhanced
opportunities for non-formal education, increased employability,
competitiveness, social inclusion and active citizenship - they are of
course right, we know.
But what they do not yet fully appreciate is that Scouting is a
significant provider of volunteering opportunities. That is our and your
challenge: NSOs and the Region must work together in closer co-operation
in order to exploit the potential of a growing awareness of the importance
of volunteering. The Written Declaration is an excellent example of what
we can achieve if we work together. If you would like to accept this
challenge contact Mike [ mailto:mwa...@scout.org ]mwa...@scout.org or

General Assembly at KISC
Last month KISC held its General Assembly for the members of the KISC
Association, including NSO Members. The Assembly is held every two years
and members get to have their say on issues such as price changes, the
Statutes of the Association, marketing strategies of the Centre and
members of the KISC Committee.
During the Assembly, three new Committee members were elected; Eliane
Baumann (CH), Individual Member; Mads Sebastian Hansen (DK), Nordic
Representative and Stefano Della Torre (IT), Italian Representative. Some
important changes were made to the statutes and all members were given a
thorough update of the past two years in the Centre and plans for future
developments.

Kander Lodge construction underway
Kandersteg International Scout Centre welcomes over 11'000 Scouts and
Guides from all around the world every year. The number of people visiting
is ever-growing and with that, the Centre is ever-growing too. The latest
development to happen at the Centre is the addition of a new building, the
Kander Lodge.
The new building will not only provide more accommodation, for 44 people
at a high standard, but also some other much needed facilities for the
Centre, including catering and dinning facilities and a large indoor
programme area.
The building is already in existence and will be moved to a location
across the river from the main Chalet in KISC, on the Rovergelande
Campsite. So far the area where it will be moved to has been prepared,
including clearing and levelling of the ground and the relocation of a
main path on the campsite.
Now the building, in its current location, is being stripped and broken
down by our staff. Later in the summer professionals will take the
building apart and move it 10km to our site. During autumn the building
will be rebuilt to our specifications and will be ready to welcome its
first guests in winter.
For further updates of work on the Kander Lodge see the Latest News on [
