Educational Methods
Mid Summer's Night
19-21 June 2009 in Finland
The members of the Youth Programme Core Group travelled to Finland, where the locals were busy celebrating the Mid-Summer Festival during longest day of the year where it does not get dark at night. The Core Group spent the weekend putting detailed plans together to ensure the goals for the rest of the triennium are accomplished, and were lucky enough to experience some truly traditional hospitality, wonderful home cooking and finding time to catch up with some old friends. A very successful weekend all round.
Roverway 2009
20-28 July 2009 in Iceland
The biggest Scouting in event in Europe for young people between 16 and 22 years of age started in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, on the 20th July. Over 3000 participants from all over Europe and around the world, gathered for an opening ceremony that got everyone into the Rover spirit.
>From the opening ceremony, Rovers headed off to 4-day journeys as tribes consisting of around 50 people. The journeys took the participants to different parts of Iceland for a taste of the Icelandic diverse locations. The journeys eventually all ended up at Althingi, a joint camp, where the remaining four days were spent celebrating and continuing the learning process begun during the journey.
This unique opportunity for young members of the Movement to gather and experience an adventure in an intercultural setting is organized jointly by the European Regions of WOSM and WAGGGS every three years. The Scout and Guide Organization of Iceland has been working hard to deliver a quality event and now everyone present at the camp can really see that the work has paid off.

Each participant is requested to present their project related to the Millennium Development Goals. Participants will also have the opportunity to discover the local Scouting. They will also take part in thematic workshops.

Development and Support
Membership registration software offered by the European Scout Region
The Organisational Development Core Group in collaboration with the Scout Association of Lithuania has developed membership registration software that is available for associations of the European Scout Region. Funded by the Partnerships Fund for Development and Growth of the Region, this software was originally developed by the Scout Association of Lithuania for their own use.
The work of the Organisational Development Core Group has made it clear that there is a need for a good membership registration software and database tool. Reliable membership data is key to develop, implement and follow up on an association's membership development and growth strategy. The Lithuanian system was translated into English and, with Lithuanian support, an English language manual and code description was written so that the software can be easily deployed throughout the European Scout Region.
The membership registration software is supported by an online database that can be updated by the local groups if the association chooses to do so. It is easy to understand and can be adapted to the needs of every association.
The Organisational Development Core Group thanks the Scout Association of Lithuania for its support in this project.
If you are interested in this new tool offered by the Region, please contact Katrin Kelly kke...@scout.org.
Life of the Movement
Greenpeace at KISC
The World Scout Centre at Kandersteg has been chosen by Greenpeace to be a Solar Generation learning station during this Summer season. Greenpeace has appointed 3 volunteers to spend a total of 7 weeks in Kandersteg running workshops for Scouts around the themes of clean energy, solar motorcars and alpine wind.
Greenpeace conceived this Solar Generation project in 2003 with the aim to educate young people about clean energy sources and invite them to take action against global warming in their countries, presenting the solar energy as a solution. The Solar Generation project is now active in Germany, China, the Philippines, India, Slovakia and Togo, among others countries. This, combined with our reworked Eco Adventure programme promises to keep KISC as being a leading Scout Centre for the environment.
The KISC Permanent mini-Jamboree in pictures
This Summer, our Staff Team is formed by 31 Short Term Staff and 29 Long Term Staff, plus 7 High Season Staff and 4 Snow and Ice guides. Now you can also take a deeper look at what is happening at KISC by visiting our Weekly Photo Gallery. Here you will find pictures taken during our in-camp activities, with hundreds of Scouts from many countries taking part every day. The gallery is updated every two days with new pictures and is available here:
