I spent last weekend quad biking in Perthshire, which granted isn't wilderness strictly speaking, but it was great fun and there was plenty of stopping on top of hills to take in the fantastic Perthshire vistas.

I might have also destroyed a farmers fence with the misapplication of throttle. Danger and pretty views in equal measure!

You'd probably need a group of folk and some sort of transport, but it's local-ish, I think. A good start? Maybe someone more familiar with Norther-Scotland can offer something more useful :)

Hi all,

I hope this isn't too off-topic.

I am taking a the remainder of the week after the Scottish Ruby Conf. to explore Scotland and I wonder if you fine folks have any advice as to what not to miss.

I'm most interested in wilderness, and will not have a car.

I figured I would ask here rather than the conference mailing list as there are probably a few more locals...

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Wilderness without a car could be tricky... if you find yourself in Aberdeen, you can explore Deeside by taking the 201 bus out west along the Dee valley, which will get you out to Ballater and Braemar in the Cairngorms. Plenty of walks etc if that's your thing.

The west coast is quite explorable by public transport, I've found.

You can get a train from Glasgow to Fort William, then another over to Mallaig and get the ferry to Skye. The bus services are still pretty good.
