Hello

I’m a Rails developer in Aberdeen who started out with Rails back in the Rails 3 days.

I’m looking to reconnect with the Scottish developer community. I think the last Ruby conference I attended was in Edinburgh around 2012 give or take a couple of years.

How do I join the ScotRug Slack ?

I’m not a social media user so looking for the best way to keep up with what the group is doing and especially in person events.

Thank you
Andrew Sage

Hi Andrew!

Thanks for reaching out, and welcome to the ScotRUG community! My name is James, and I'm one of the user group organisers. We haven't done much up in the North East in the time I've been involved, but we're always interested in figuring out how to expand what we do to other locations.

But first, your immediate question: this mailing list and our website (https://scotrug.org) are the only two maintained community spaces we have online. We don't have a chatroom (apart from an idle IRC channel). This is partially as a result of trying to figure out what place best suits people, and more recently as a result of the Online Safety Act. The Act places a high burden on any community space online of any size (which isn't a mailing list). I am working with a group of folks in Europe (the Ruby Europe group), who maintain a Discord instance with channels for different communities. Once we have written policies and procedures in place for the OSA, we'll switch our chats to there.

In short: no Slack group, and when we do have a chat room, it'll be in Discord.

We run in person events monthly on the second Thursday of the month. Currently, these are in Edinburgh, though we're hoping to expand out to Glasgow this year. If you're interested in having something up in Aberdeen, I'd be happy to chat about it to help make it happen!

But if you want to keep track of what we're doing, the website and this mailing list are the two places we announce everything.

Hope you had a good festive period, and all the best for the new year!

James
