Peter
Sorry I wasn't able to join you on the 7th - it looks like you had a
very interesting discussion. Thanks for the notes and the very useful
list of existing public data.
The points you make about commercial and social benefit from publicly
available data seem to be at the core of why the government should be
interested in open data. Aside from the transparency and
accountability arguments for data publishing, it seems to me that in
this information age, organisations should see publishing online
information about the services they provide as an essential aspect of
providing those services.
And if that is done in such a way as to encourage discovery and re-
use, it can enhance the value of public services at very modest cost
to the government, by letting the public, companies, quangos (if there
are any left next week), charities etc organise the information in
ways that is useful to them and their target audiences.
From the viewpoint of the commercial sector, if companies organise/
process/transform that information to make something more valuable, in
some cases it will be possible for them to earn money from that extra
value.
Anyway, I think I am just saying that I agree with your analysis!
If you plan any follow-up meetings on this topic, I'd certainly like
to join in if I can.
Regards
Bill
