I figured I'd take a minute to introduce myself to everybody involved in
the twinning clinics project in both Scotland and Malawi! It seems like
it would be a good idea for everyone involved to join in with a brief
piece of writing about themselves and their involvement in the project!
I realise that some of us have got entries on the website, but this
should prove a more interactive way to get to know each other.
Before I crack on with my introduction, I'll tell you briefly how to
post an introduction to the mailing list. It's really no harder than
sending an email!!
1) Open your email program (if you're reading this you've already done
it!)
2) Create/Compose a new email as you would normally do, but instead of
sending it to a person, send it to this email address:
scotland_ma...@googlegroups.com
(You might want to add this address to your email address book to
make contacting the list even easier!)
3) Enter a subject line as you'd normally do (e.g. Hi everyone!).
4) Write your introduction (e.g. "Hi, my name is Bob and I...")
5) Click send!
(as an aside if you want to reply to a message on the list, be sure to
click 'Reply to all' rather than Reply).
That's it! It's really that simple. I'm looking forward to reading
about each of you! If you have any problems doing this then you can
email me directly and I'll see if I can help you out.
So here we go, here's my introduction:
My name is Rick Moynihan and I'm a Software Engineer working for Calico
Jack LTD. We've had the pleasure of working with Dr Ron Neville for
many years now, and have taken a small advisory role in the uses of
technology within the project with the aim of building a vibrant
community of participants, both in Malawi and Scotland. I live in
Dundee (Scotland), practice Aikido (a Japanese martial art) and am a
vegetarian.
Yesterday, whilst making some improvements with Jemma to the website, I
was humbled by something 'supposedly simple' being hard to figure out.
This reminded me about how complex computers, the web, blogging, and
email can appear especially if you're not a professional computer geek
like me!
On this note, I'd also like to offer help and advice to people
struggling to use their computers or the website, blog, mailing list
etc. The only condition to this free advice is that if you have any
questions then you should post them to THIS MAILING LIST where I (and
hopefully others) can reply in our own free time.
You can see a photo of me on the Malawi Clinics website at the following
address ( http://malawiclinics.org/partners/ ) - I'm the one *not*
holding the owl!

Hi
My name is Susan Duncan. I work as General Manager at Dr McIntosh & Partners, Blue Practice, Stockbridge Health Centre in Edinburgh. I also live in central Edinburgh. Our practice has twinned with Ndirande Clinic in Blantyre.
Unfortunately we are unable to access the website from work. I have spoken to NHS Lothian IM&T Department about this and they don’t think it has anything to do with the Lothian Firewall but any help would be appreciated [Rick – do you have any suggestions]?

Hi Susan, welcome to the online group!

Website access issues such as this are frustrating and can be hard to
diagnose, though if the site is accessible from elsewhere (which it
is) it is invariably an issue with either the computer and it's
configuration/software or your internet service provider (presumably
in this case the NHS).
- Specifically what happens when you try and connect to
http://malawiclinics.org/ ?
- Does the problem effect the whole site or is it isolated to just
video/picture content?
- Are there any other websites which you know of which are plagued by
the problem?
- Does the problem manifest itself on other machines within your practice?
I still suspect it to be an issue caused by firewalling, as I have
connected to the website successfully from many different networks.
If this is the case I'd suggest you again approach the NHS Lothian
IM&T Department and ask them to try connecting to the site themselves.
If you still don't get anywhere I might be able to suggest some ways
to further diagnose the issue.
Is anyone else experiencing similar issues?
Rick.
Thanks for this. I can access the website from my home computer but
when I try at work I only get part of it - no pictures, videos,
information etc - just headings. Usually if you can't get onto a
website from work it just says access denied and doesn't let you in at
all.
I will try and contact IM & T again and see what they say.
Susan
