Good afternoon all,

I attach a skeleton Agenda for our next meeting on Monday 2nd June. As you will see we have a guest - Iain Horn, who is going to cover Regulation of With Profit Funds and Mutuals. There will be the usual slots for Investment and Pensions with your Dropbox already including TDC and Jagger & Associates Updates since we last met; There are even some other snippets from the pensions and trustee world!

I’m chairing the next meeting and Andrew Muir is Secretary (and Chairman for September). (Stephen Makin has joined the life practice at Hymans).

I think the profession’s initiative on quality assurance demands some attention and you (with or without a soapbox) should feel free to volunteer to lead the discussion. A lack of volunteers will only result in questions being asked of those attending and not attending!

Suggestions for other topics will be most gratefully received. Please confirm to al...@acmca.co.uk if you are attending and wish to dine afterwards.

Regards

Allan

Many thanks for this. However I am now employed and so I should gracefully withdraw. Which is a shame having enjoy my first meeting quite so much.

Kind regards. Paul

Unfortunately I am on contract with Bupa in London until October so can't make this or the next meeting which is a shame as it looks interesting. Regards.

I am afraid I am away on 2nd June. Would have like to have come to the meeting as the agenda item on WP mutuals is of interest.

I will/will not go to the meeting. I honestly don't know from day to day. I'm not sure that I am cut out for actuarial contracting anymore. I don't know whether I should continue to pay the FIA subscription.

For the last 16 months I have had no work at all. Yet I have a wife and child to support. Two weeks ago I started a contract with Scottish Widows, originally at Edinburgh, now based at Livingston and the agent is Regulatory Finance Solutions (RFS). It is not actuarial work, it is pensions complaint handling.

RFS have messed me about from the start.

Two weeks ago on the tuesday I printed off all the paperwork (23 page application form) plus they wanted my FIA certificate etc scanned , my wife had to get from loft. I went down the library and scanned 36 pages in all , went home and was about to email them. On arriving home they said that I could not start as they had not received any documents. I said wednesday was the deadline not tuesday 5pm. From 5pm to 6pm I emailed the documents.

On wednesday they said that since I did not have skype that I had to go to Edinburgh for an interview and that I must get £1m liability cover before the start. I took out annual cover, non-refundable from Kinghtsbridge for £424. Later in the day they said the interview was not necessary and instead I should bring in all the paperwork on tuesday for verification.

On the friday I got another call saying that I had been unemployed for the last 16 months and asked if I had been in jail. I was very insulted and said that my wife would verify I had not. They would not take my wife's word in case she was lying. They then asked for my personal bank statements for the last 16 months to prove my innocence. I said I had internet banking so no statements. They asked for screen prints. We said this information was too personal to disclose. They said without this I would not start. I said I had already paid £424. They said that they would take my accountant's word that I was not a criminal on headed note-paper instead. Luckily he did this.

Last tuesday at work I went to sit down at the seat I had used the previous day. However another contractor was sitting in it speaking  to 3 other contractors. I asked him politely 5 times to move but he refused. The other 3 contractors backed him up. They made fun of me and bullied me. I then asked him if he wanted to fight over it, then he moved. He and another contractor continued to bully me over the next two days over this.

Last night RFS sent me an email saying my contract has been terminated with immediate effect for gross misconduct. My belongings are still in Livingston and I intend going in on monday asking Scottish Widows for an explanation as this is totally unfair.
