Hi all - I've today received the invitation below to write an article about the possible pensions implications of Scottish independence from either a pro- or anti-independence viewpoint.  However, as I'm now pretty much 'out of the loop' re current pensions legislation, I'm going to decline, but wonder if any of you might like to take this on?

And failing that, might you know of someone else who is sufficiently exercised by the topic to write such a piece?

Please let let me know if you can help in any of the above capacities.   Cheers.   Ronnie

Dear Ronnie,

ACA - Placard - Scottish Independence

Please excuse the direct email.  We have not met before but Graeme Muir passed me your name.  I am contacting you in my role as the editor of the ACA’s periodic publication, Placard.  The ACA main committee have decided that they would like the next Placard issue to be about the pensions implications of possible Scottish Independence – with one author presenting a “pro-independence” view point and the other author presenting an “anti-independence” viewpoint.

I was therefore wondering whether you would be interested in writing one of the articles for this next Placard edition? And if not, whether you might know of any other actuaries who might be happy to contribute? (We are ideally only looking to get contributions from consulting actuaries who both live and work in Scotland).

Of course I entirely understand if it wouldn’t be possible for you to contribute, particularly because I am aware it is a relatively sensitive and highly political issue! (For example, I know Hymans Robertson have a policy whereby they wish to remain neutral).

If you are interested however, I can provide you with more details on the specifics in due course.  We are hoping to get the issue out before the ACA sessional event in June (26th) as this is likely to be the topic for debate that evening.   There is also no specific word limit but I would suggest something between 750 – 1,500 words.

If you are not familiar with Placard, I have included a link below to some past issues:

I look forward to hearing from you and many thanks for any help – the ACA is very grateful!

Kind regards,

Cathy

Not for me Ronnie. On this issue I am polling my English clients to see if they would still instruct me if we were independent and particulary independent with a different currency. I suspect not. I am also thinking of setting up a company in england to preserve the sterling nature of assets my Scottish company has ! John

Hi Ronnie
I will have a look at the link and get back to you tomorrow re whether I would do this. I would only put the case against independence . Ie supporting a NO vote.
I am not a member of ACA.
Cheers

Hello Ronnie and Harry,
I don't know about the pension issues to write authoritatively but I would be supporting quite definitely the NO campaign.
I am quite aghast about the amount of time, money and effort that has been spent on pro-independence with most of the real negotiation and resolution of all the issues and problems not even highlighted, never mind the dialogue and costs that would have to be undertaken thereafter.
Cheers,
Gordon.

Those who think about the issues mainly vote no. Those who vote emotionally mainly vote yes. No amount of rational analysis will convince the latter group.

Good morning,

Whilst I have no interest in joining the independence debate let alone writing about it, I thought I could usefully share the attached. I think is the best contribution to the debate since a (biased) spring 2013 paper from H M Treasury on currency and borrowing options.

The gilts/kilts reference has been reserved for the belated April Pension Snippets!

Regards

Allan

Hi Ronnie,
I would be willing to write a short piece supportive of the NO campaign ( ie anti independence). Let me know if ACA want to proceed.
Cheers
