My very important budget-file is corrupted! I use Excel for Mac 2008 on my Macbook (Mac OS X 10.6.8). I recently used the file but now when I want to open it it says 'The file you are trying to open is possibly read-only or the location you are trying to open is read-only. Or the server you are trying to access is not responding'.

I tried all of these recommendations to no avail. I even went as far as to buy a file repair application (it just crashed repeated). In the end I found that I could open my Excel file in Numbers! I then exported from Numbers back to Excel and voila! Problem solved!

3. Click on the small drop-down arrow at the right side of the "Open" button. Choose the "Open and Repair" option. Choose "Repair" to have Excel attempt to recover the damaged file. Choose "Extract data" to extract the information in the spreadsheet to another file.

6. Choose the "All files and folders" option and type ".xls" in the search box. This will find all Excel spreadsheets on your computer, whether they were created in Excel 2007 or an earlier version. Click "OK" to start the search.

let them do the open and repair ( open black excel file / file / open / choose file / choose open and repair (there is open button and and arrow , click the arrow to show open and repair button ) / the file will open / save it / let him send it back to your email / open it on your mac and its solved

I have experienced the same problem and was wondering if any software can help me fix the issue. I could not find any software that can repair Excel file on the Mac so I copied the file on Windows and tried demo version of a software. That works up to an extent, but could not recover the formatting.

This is an excellent tip, and saved me several hours of rework. I had a largish file with some tangly formulas with indirect, dcount/dstdev, averageif, and some array formulas and it stopped opening. Excel would crash with a EXCBADACCESS every time, on multiple machines and the most recent backup that would open meant losing several hours work. After opening it with auto-calculation turned off and saving it and turning auto-calc back on, it stopped crashing Excel on open.

Marifilps364, the instructions you provided are for the Windows version of Excel running on Microsoft Windows. The software you linked to is for Windows only. Useful information but not applicable to Macs.

I followed the suggestion to send the file to a Windows system. Then I changed the extension .xlsx to .xls on Explorer, and proceeded to open the file on Excel. I byassed any warnings to proceed as such, and Excel was able to open the file. I then saved the file as .xlsx, and sent it back to the Mac system.

I am writing to an .xlsx file in an Alteryx workflow and I receive the following error: 'We found a problem with some content...Do you want to try to recover as much as we can?' Once I click yes, I then receive this pop up: 'Removed Records: Cell Information from /xl/worksheets/sheet12.xml part'

I was getting this same error when using the render tool to create the excel file. I found that it was because I used the report header to dynamically pull in data from a field into the header of excel and the data was too large. So I changed the font size and that solved it.

A few things to clarify before the weird part. The file was completely ok a couple days ago and some days we had a few power outages which the PC was turned off presuming with the file opened as thats why its shows now this message.

The weird part is that after i open the file and try to save it as a separate one, or try to copy the content to another excel or transfer the data, it always show the repair message when opening the file !

No matter what i tried it shows the message. So i would like your opinions on that or if someone faced the same thing as searching through the net, i only find how to repair the file but no how to stop showing it.

I am currently unable to open a macro enabled workbook without losing the functionality of the workbook. I am working from Excel version 2004, build 12730.20250 Click-to-Run. This is part of my company's Microsoft 365 for enterprise subscription. This is a workbook that I have not had to use for a few months, so I am not sure exactly when the issue started. I have worked with our IT and have had no luck in resolving the issue. We have done a clean install of Excel and of the Microsoft 365 suite with no success. I have several files that use this template and all of them show the same error. I have the original file on a usb and it has the same issue. I have sent it to other colleagues and they were able to open the file with no issue. I will provide some screenshots below of what I am seeing and provide the workbook as well.

This is the screen I see when I try to open the file. Not sure if this is legible, but it says "We found a problem with some content in 'Estimating VMA and Voids Template 2018-02-26.xlsm'. Do you want us to try to recover as much as we can? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes."

After clicking yes, this is what I get. (I will have another screen shot of what this screen and workbook actually should look like.) I get a message letting me know that the sheet was "repaired". Log file of repairs is in the quote below. I do not have the expertise to see if there is something in this error message that may point me in the direction of a solution. This "repair" breaks the workbook and its functionality.

I am able to open the workbook in safe mode and it retains all functionality. I am looking to be able to open the sheet without having to open excel in safe mode every time. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Recently, there have been a lot of issues with the bots not being able to open Excel workbooks using the Excel scope activities. Usually, if you restart the bot, it runs fine but it is affecting multiple production bots sporadically.

Thanks for the response, @Raluca_Laic
On Client A - this started happening around september last year. This was the only client that started having issues after having bots in production for a while. We repaired, uninstalled/reinstalled 32/64-bit but nothing changed. Still had this error popup occasionally:

Are there any best practices? All i can think of is adding retry scope around Excel scope and try to keep the workbooks open wherever possible, but some redundancy on the activity itself would be ideal.

UiPath.Excel.Activities.ExcelProcessScopeX Opens or reuses Excel processes, loads the Excel project settings and applies them to the associated Excel file. This activity makes managing Excel processes easier by allowing you to configure the launch...

I am using the latest version of Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus where I created a Dashboards of sorts in .xlsb format. Which I use all of the time without problems. This file has worked great up until today. When I open it I receive an error stating "Can't Find Project or Library". I do no know this is referencing a missing Reference file in VBA but when I open the VBA Editor the windows become frozen in the editor and no codes are visible. When I select Tools Reference nothing happens. I have had this happen on a different, unrelated file about a month ago and a quick repair fixed the issue. I just completed the repair and the issue still exist. My next step is online repair. Before I do this, I simply do not understand what went wrong, when nothing changed. Is there a fix for this that someone could let me in on. Everyone here knows how critical it is that when presenting data to clients, that in order for them to have confidence in your data it must be correct and without error. Well it just so happens that when I was presenting this in a meeting today is when the file decided to go haywire. My company is beginning to invest heavily in AI software and once again this does not look good on me or Excel. It just bolsters up AI Software even more (which will eventually replace us data analysts). I know the folks at Excel are working hard so, I am not miffed at them but Excel has got to get better. I have so many examples of this type of stuff happening more often than not. Not just me but my other Data Analysis partners as well. Excel needs to hire some of its old school retired programmers back and sort the messes out and teach the new programmers.

@heylookitsme Further Investigation (opened in Safe Mode) allows me to open and select all of the data in the VBA Editor (which I quickly saved to word). Tools, Reference shows 5 Checked Ref Files: out of those 5 files the Locations of them are accurate and good. No Blank or unusual file references showing. However, when I view the Object Library Window there is a selection for VBAProject which is not listed in my Library Reference and the location of the file is showing the same as this file with this file being its reference. So, this is what is causing the error. Now how to remove a Reference Library that is not showing in your Refence toolbox and how to locate and add the VBAProject Reference so it can be added back into the reference library from the correct location.

@heylookitsmeSo for anyone with this issue here is the fix: I opened tools and selected VBAProject and then changed the name to something else. This caused it to drop that bad file reference object that was just pointing back to the same workbook. Not sure how it happened.
