Gazetteer For Scotland
In collaboration with the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, the Department
of Geography at the University of Edinburgh is developing a comprehensive
geographical database for Scotland, accessible via the World-Wide Web. This
will be presented as a major enhancement to the existing, and heavily accessed,
"Gateway to Scotland" site.
The gazetteer will provide an easy to use on-line data source, incorporating
hypermaps, word search and a range of database query facilities for data sets
containing geographic features, historic buildings, tourist attractions,
family names, famous people and census data. The user requirements have
incorporated the large number of responses to the web-based questionnaire which
we ran recently. Our grateful thanks to everyone who responded to that.
The pilot phase of this project is currently being developed, but the first
instalment of this ambitious programme is now on-line via:
http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/home/scotland/scotland.html
and includes a clickable map of the new Scottish Council areas, an overview
of the aims, rationale and history behind the development and an opportunity
to become a sponsor of the project.
Further functionality will be added to this site over the coming weeks, with
the aim of making a full demonstrator (for the area of Fife) available within
the next two months.
