DS is 16 and just finishing year 11 and will be going into sixth form in September. I know that various entertainment/retail outlets offer student discounts with "Student ID" but don't generally define what ID is acceptable. We live in London, so DS has an 11-15 Zip card that will soon be replaced with a 16-18 Zip card. Are they usually acceptable as Student ID?

When we google for other types of student id there are various types that come up, but all seem very commercial, aimed at collecting their data, which is offputting.

Any tips appreciated!

College or 6th form access card for student ID.
Provisional driving licence for age ID.

If they have a school/college email address it's worth signing up for something like the Unidays or Studentbeans websites where they can get good discounts on many high street shops and restaurants etc.

If you bought (or just got quotes for) car or home insurance on Friday 19 July, it's possible you didn't see some of the cheapest deals, as some insurers were unable to offer quotes due to widespread IT problems.

Carpet and flooring retailer Carpetright will close over 200 stores after falling into administration. Many orders now won't be processed, while gift cards and warranties have been rendered virtually worthless.

Regulation of the buy now, pay later sector WILL go ahead, the new Government has confirmed. It means consumers will finally get much-needed safeguards on BNPL purchases, as well as protection from unsustainable borrowing.

If you're confused by the 'two-child benefit cap' and what it really means, MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis has shared a quick and simple briefing to clear up much of the misinformation. His video below takes you through the benefit cap and the limits for Child Benefit and Universal Credit.

These mid-contract price rises will be banned from January 2025, regulator Ofcom has confirmed. But MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) founder Martin Lewis has warned that the new rules will still allow for above-inflation price rises.

I figured I had better use these cards before the dreaded closure happens for non use. Well obviously I haven't used in quite some time. I tried to look up my user ID and tried to enter my card number and DOB. States it needs to be 16 digits, well card has only 14 digits?

Sorry to hear about the other account. For the one still open, are you on the right Lowe's card page? My card is also 14 digits (Lowe's Visa Rewards card is 16, Lowe's Amex would be 15). The one for Synchrony is here and asks for card number and ZIP Code, rather than DOB:

Anyway got account restored, our last payment was in February 2020, so that's why he is still active thank goodness. Mine hasn't been used in over a year. Funny I went to lowes last week to purchase a shower head and "thought" I used my card, but I am an AU on his and that's the card I apparently used . Oh well probably would have not worked since they stated my card was close b/c of inactivity on 5/9/20.

Man sorry @Jnbmom im not a fan of just closing a card because of low usage, 2 years sure close away, but dang if you arent late or running mad balance, let your client be. But at the end its their card. As sad as it is, just let you use another lenders card so shame on them for possibly losing a customer

Isn't it annoying going to the cinema and being turned away because you don't have any "accepted ID" on you? Trying to buy lottery tickets for your family? It isn't right that to be able to do these things, you have to carry your passport around, when there's a perfectly good ZIP card in your pocket

The 16-17 railcard gives a 50% discount on the train company standard fare pricing (which, from memory, makes it cheaper than the 16+ Oyster discount) and that applies to season tickets as well as any others for peak time trains as well as off-peak ones.

Please do not apply for the 18+ oystercard until you are living in London during term time and have updated your Portico record to show this. You will not be eligible for the card if you do not live in London during term time.

If you will only be making a few journeys on public transport, you may not need to use a Travelcard or Bus & Tram Pass season ticket and therefore would not need an 18+ photocard. You may be better off using pay as you go at the adult rate and not paying the 20 fee. For example, to hit a weekly Travelcard in zones 1-2, you would need to make at least fourteen Tube journeys (which would cost 2.40 each within zones 1-2) or 22 bus journeys (which always cost 1.50, no matter how far you travel) to make it worth buying a 33 weekly Travelcard, and thus benefit from the discount.

Please note: You must enter your institution name correctly in order for the application to be successful - if the form does not automatically select 'UCL' when you type it in, please click the link to view a list of all eligible institutions and pick 'UCL' from the list. If you extend your period of study, you will need to apply for a new Oyster photocard to cover the additional time. UCL is not responsible for any inaccuracies in your Oyster photocard end date. If your status changes and you are no longer eligible for the 18+ Oyster photocard (because you leave UCL, interrupt your studies or change to part-time status) we are required to report this to TfL.

To be eligible for free bus and tram travel, the applicant must be aged 16 or 17 on 31st August and be living in a London borough. If the applicant is 18, UCL does not sign the form as a Higher Education Institute (level 6).

The 16-25 and 26-30 railcards are plastic cards or downloadable as an app that gives you 1/3 off rail fairs. Many home students consider buying a 16-25 or 26-30 railcard if they are intending to travel by train fairly often, for example, to visit family.

Young person coach cards are available for all people aged 16 - 26 or full-time students over the age of 26. They give you a third (33.3%) off all Standard and Fully Flexible coach fares with the National Express.

I have several retro machines and add-on cards for the Amiga that use ZIP RAM. This vertically mounted chip design enjoyed a brief popularity in the early 1990s, in between the original DIP DRAM and the rise of the SIMM memory.

SIMM offered the same space advantage, but with a more complicated socket and with the RAM chips having to be soldered onto a PCB. Overall, seems like a more costly way to go than ZIP RAM, but SIMM obviously won in the market.

Note: I get that SIMM insertion and removal is relatively easy, but that ease-of-upgrade option only makes sense if it was a major consumer selling point. My recollection is that most motherboard RAM upgrades happened at the point-of-sale, with vendors likely choosing the cheapest solution.

The ZIP package was mostly replaced by better packages. Ignoring for a moment the variety of memory modules (DIMM etc) most memories moved to SOP, SOIC, TSOP or BGA for higher pin density, improved mechanical stability and lower package height.
