Individual Climate Action with Impact: Five Climate Superpowers to SHIFT the System

The recording from our latest Drawdown Ignite webinar is now available!

Join climate scientist and author Kimberly Nicholas, Ph.D. as she shares her new personalized climate action guide, based on years of peer-reviewed research, to identify the most effective climate actions. Developed in partnership with Project Drawdown, the Super High-Impact Initiative for Fixing Tomorrow (SHIFT) helps people understand how to best take climate action in their own lives.

Individual climate action is an essential part of stopping the climate crisis. Check out some of the resources shared during the webinar below to learn more.

And be sure to register for our next Drawdown Ignite webinar on Oct. 6 where Dr. Jonathan Foley, executive director of Project Drawdown, will be sharing the Drawdown Explorer – the world's ultimate climate solutions platform!

Dear Scorai colleagues,

While we should individually do all we feel we can do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (basically CO2 for individuals), almost all countries in the world are backsliding on the issue, and are not doing what their national plans committed to years ago. Thus, global CO2 emissions have continued to increase each year in spite of the fact that they were supposed to have begun decreasing. Since global average annual temperature increases have already passed the hoped for Paris Agreement target of 1.5 degrees C, there is no longer any hope possible that that target can be achieved. It is not even possible to keep the temperature increase under 2.0 degrees C given the surprising tripling of the earth system energy imbalance over the last 20 years that climate scientists only recently realized was happening. This is why climate change impacts seem to be accelerating, particularly over the last 10 years, because the extra energy really is there to really make that happen. This tripling of the energy imbalance is relatively new information that very few people know of so far, and it cannot be produced by most climate change models. Some things are much worse now, and climate scientists are not sure what they are. Note also that only about 2% of the extra energy imbalance goes to heating the air, so focusing on air temperature increases is not even the best way to think about climate change, since about 90% of the additional energy goes into heating the oceans, with the rest melting the ice and glaciers, and heating the land.

The unfortunate implication of this new data is that the world is rapidly getting farther and farther away from any type of state that we might justifiably call sustainable, so we need to give up on using that word also. What we do need to do now is to analyze how societies and countries should begin to try to mitigate and adapt to the various kinds of disasters that are becoming more apparent to everyone. As you all know by now, even food  prices are starting to show noticeable increases in the last couple of years due to climate change, which will feed into causing overall inflation to rise worldwide, and which might lead to new worldwide financial  crises.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but Scorai folks need to confront this new reality head on.

Regards to all,

Rich Rosen

Hi Rich,

Yes, I have also been following the deeply concerning energy imbalance findings - including

The leadership of governments and business is essential, and we also know in our SCORAI community and analyzed by our scientific and academic colleagues in the IPCC (2022) that scaling demand-side solutions is a significant part of mitigation and adaptation.

You may not have had a chance to look at Prof. Kimberly Nicholas helpful Guide - it emphasizes taking citizen action for those of us living in democracies, shifting investment away from fossil fuels (in our personal lives and in our work and communities), orienting our professional lives to the mitigation and adaptation you are noting, taking action on our highest impact climate actions, and becoming and elevating role models of low-carbon living. These are all needed.

Rich, it is a solid point that we need to engage in our work with a clear understanding of the earth system energy imbalance and the consequences including rising food costs and financial instability.

All the best,

Vanessa

Unfortunately, we do not have control over most of the investments in fossil fuels and the energy system generally.  --- Rich
