The mining sector is working hard to take advantage of the climate crisis, painting mining as "green" because it supplies materials needed to support the green energy transition. But unless demand for both energy and materials are curtailed, environmental destruction and social conflicts will also continue to grow. How can a "Green New Deal" address this contradiction?

I would like to bring to everyone’s attention the Al Jazeera’s documentary about the environmental and social cost of energy transition. Jean Boucher sent it out a week ago and somehow it escaped the  notice of SCORAI-ers. The message is not new but it is very well told. It may be effectively used as educational  material for the general public as well as techno-optimists.

There is a dark side to all consumption, but the world still needs to achieve 100% renewable energy as fast as possible. It is not a matter of "technological optimism" but necessity.  Again, less consumption aided by lower population growth all help to minimize other negative impacts.   --- Rich

I had similar concerns about the documentary. I thought it was interesting and posed some very important questions, but I also found the framing problematic as most of the issues highlighted could be considered to stem from a reluctance to address energy demand, rather than the green energy transition more broadly.

This point kind of came out towards the end, but I'd have preferred it to be a major part of the framing from the outset.

Best,
Joel

From what I know, Sweden has had some form of an energy tax since the mid 1920s (maybe other countries have also?). Obviously distinct from a carbon tax. Maybe we need to talk more about a general energy tax to help shift people's thinking that energy, in any form, is not free from unseen impacts. See some of this here:
