Communicating Post-Fossil Fuel Futures in Popular Culture

Having surpassed the 1.5-degree limit for global heating, at a time when the very discussion of climate action is being framed as “fake news” by the “radical Left,” the work of those communicating sustainable solutions is becoming increasingly tense. Speaking about the science and technologies of climate change has taken us only so far, as disinformation campaigns provoke distrust and antagonism. 

How has popular culture responded to this situation in representing these competing narratives? How are sustainability communicators addressing the role of popular culture in the narrative wars over the need for transition to post-fossil fuel futures? What strategies for communicating and advancing post-fossil fuel futures are being explored as the global stakes continue to rise with increasing temperatures?

This cross-pollination session will introduce the recently launched POI Project* (“Phasing Out and In”) to map some of the different communication strategies, frames, and concepts emerging among various knowledge/action networks and communities of practice. The project plans to produce a video, based on a series of interviews in the coming year, on the global movement toward phasing out fossil fuels and phasing in post-carbon transitions.
